Cord Blood Storage

My doctor gave me a pamphlet from CBR (Cord Blood Registry), but I keep getting things in the mail from ViaCord.  Has anyone heard anything positive or negative about either of these storage facilities?

  • We've decided to donate our cord blood. It just seemed like a better decision.

  • We went with CBR, because that is what our doctor used most often. I felt more comfortable using a company/collection system that the doctor was familiar with.

Is there a fee to donate?

Do you have some details on how to do this?  I wanted to donate with DD, but my OB acted like there's no way to do that--that no one wants to pay to store cord blood for you, even if you are donating it.  I'm not sure how much info he really had on the topic.  I did hear from several people that it costs you a fee to donate, though.  Is that true?  Any info you can offer would be great!
