My best friend had her baby and I will be heading over there tonight. What should I bring? I feel funny bringing something for the baby since she just had her shower two weeks ago? What would you bring? She is home now.
I would bring food. Anything for dinner (especially something that will keep for a few days or can be frozen) or anything to snack on. It was so hard to plan meals for the first week or two. One friend brought a lasagna, a loaf of Italian bread, and a bag of salad -- we ate off of that for lunch and dinner for three days!
Could you bring a meal? Including a salad or veggies. Because THAT was the best thing people brought me. Or a GC to some place near by that does take out.
Otherwise if she is your BF maybe call her and see if she needs anything from the store. I know I sent my mom and BF out a few times for little things we needed.
and something for the baby- if you want to do something small you could get a couple little board books to bring over, or you could even bring diapers/wipes which are always useful...probably would avoid clothes since I think ppl get tons of them after having babies.
Honestly, the only thing I would bring would be food. I'd stop by Whole Foods and get something from their ready made section.
So many people have brought us flowers and clothing and honestly......it's too much. I appreciate everyone's generosity but we so don't need anything else...besides sleep and perhaps someone to clean our house ; ) Now we're stuck putting flowers (at one point we had 3 huge bouquets) in our shower because our cats knock them over and we have more clothes to wash when we've already got enough laundry to do.
Sorry, "looking a gift horse in the mouth" rant is over. Just bring food ; )

I agree that food was sooo very welcome as we tried to get settled.
Here's a great recipe that freezes very well and also reheats and keeps in the fridge well. Sometimes I bake half (in a little square brownie pan) and freeze half for later. That might be nice for her.
1 (8 oz) pkg. elbow macaroni 1 (8 oz) pkg shredded sharp Cheddar cheese (if its not sharp it will be a little bland) 1 (12 oz) container small curd cottage cheese 1 (8 oz) container sour cream (all things with sour cream are tasty!) ? cup grated parmesan cheese 1 cup dry seasoned bread crumbs or crunched up pringles or corn flakes - whatever you have ? cup butter, melted
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil, add pasta, and cook until done; drain. In 9x13 pan, stir together macaroni, shredded cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, parmesan cheese. In a small bowl, mix together bread crumbs and melted butter. Sprinkle topping over macaroni mixture. Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until top is golden. YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree on a meal! And/or a GC to a restaurant that comes w/ a promise to babysit...a friend of ours just gave this to DH for his bday. I assume since you're her BF she would be okay w/ you babysitting? I guess if you think she's going to be really picky about that it wouldn't be a good gift. If you do it, they might not take you up on it for quite a while, but it'll be nice for when they are ready!
Something for baby: This book is really cool - it's all black & white (newborns don't see color at first) and it's an accordian-style board book so it'll stand up on its own - perfect for baby's tummy time. Cal had a book like this and stared at it incessantly when he was brand new! I know you can get it at Borders.

The one gift I received that I think was the most useful was a gift basket of snacks. It was delivered to my hospital room from out of state family, but you could do something similar on your own. You could pick up individually wrapped pretzels, peanuts, candy, granola bars, chocolate, nuts, etc. and fresh fruit. We had already planned a bunch of freezer meals, so it was wonderful having foods to snack on available at all times of day or night.

I would take food. We had some friends bring a bag full of Trader Joe's snacks (pretzels, crackers, etc) when we were in the hospital and it was great. We broke our the pretzels in the middle of the night because we were starving. Can't go wrong with food!
