how big is she??

He makes me crazy...He makes me crazy...

I'm a little perturbed with my doctors.  My weekly appointments seem to be rush in/rush out and not very comprehensive.  When I asked my Dr. last week how big the baby is, she flatly replied that most babies are around 5 lbs at this point (I was 36 weeks).  I went again at 37 weeks and another doctor measured with his hands and told me about 7 lbs.  That's quite a difference!  Isn't the only real way to tell via ultrasound?  They also don't want to check my cervix unless I'm having contractions so they don't irritate it.  I'm bummed.

    My doctor is pretty nonchalant too.   I just grill her when I don't feel like I'm getting the information I want.

    u/s is the most accurate way to check weight, but even that can be off by as much as 2 lbs either direction. it's all a guess. and honestly, unless they think the baby is dangerously large or small, is doesn't matter. if you are on track they are happy.

    and a lot of docs don't do internals until 38 weeks or signs of labor have begun.

    in the end, though, if you are concerns and have a question, demand an answer. it might not be the one you want, but your doc is there to give you the info you want/need.

    well even with an ultrasound its not spot on but its more accurate than the doctor trying to guess but my doctor doesnt send people for an ultrasound unless she thinks the baby is measuring too big.  You can always request an ultrasound if you really want to know badly.  As much as everyone kept saying that internals hurt and everything I kind of wanted one and my doctor wont do them either.

    Well for the best part of history doctors and midwives have taken educated guesses at  baby's size and weight by feeling it through the mom's abdomen and measuring the uterus.  As for the accuracy of ultrasound in the third tri, when I had my DS they told me that he was pushing close to 10 pounds and were trying to persuade me to have a c-section because of it.  Well one natural birth later, I had a 7 lb 6 oz little boy.  The ultrasound is only as good as the tech doing it, and even the best can misjudge.
