2nd Trimester

Ladies who use a doppler?

I've been noticing over the last week or two that I can pick up 2 separate "heartbeats" when I use my doppler.  For instance, this morning, the first one I picked up was towards the top of my uterus, which is slightly below my belly button.  It was nice and strong, in the 150s.  So definitely not my own.

Then when I moved the wand down lower, towards the top of my hair line, I found another one.  It's hard to describe, but it sounded slightly different than the other one I picked up.  But it too was in the 150s.

I'm wondering if I'm picking up bloodflow in either the placenta or the umbilical cord.  Is that possible at this point?  Has anyone else noticed 2 heartbeats like that in completely different areas?

I know it wasn't just the baby moving back and forth either because I could move the wand to each separate spot numerous times and they were both pretty stationary in those spots.

  • Yep. Happens to me regularly. I just figure it's the cord since I know we're not having twins.

  • my OB explained to me that you can pick up the HB in different spots. This topic came up because my husband mentioned (at our last appointment) that it sounded different (like a horse galloping) the OB said the HB will sound different depending on where you are picking it up. So to answer your question... yes it is normal (sorry for the drawn out explination LOL)

  • Yep, you can pick up the bloodflow through the cord after a certain point.  We hear the echo from that a lot with our little doppler dodger.

yes this happens to me to.  One will sound like a train and chug, chug, chug and near my pubic bone it sounds more like galloping.  Normal, your baby is just getting bigger and you can hear the heart beat in different places.  What is a real trip is when you can hear your heartbeat and the baby's heartbeat at the same time.
