Owen has been snotty and congested for about 2 months. The pediatrician just keeps saying it's nothing, it will clear up, etc... and we have been in 5 or 6 times to see them because of it. They told us some things to look out for, like flaring his nostrils and breathing using his stomach - he was doing both last night and we heard him all night on the monitor trying to breathe. I got him this morning and he had snot dried up on his cheeks and he must have been wiping at it because it was in his eyebrows and hair ![]()
I just feel like they aren't doing anything to help us and I have an appointment at 10:15 for him. I know I am not a Dr., but I just don't think it's normal to be snotty for 2 months. I don't want to flip out, but if they can't do anything, I think we need to be referred to a specialist or see a different pediatrician. I am just so frustrated and starting to get scared! What do you think, am I justified in being irritated? Would you demand a 2nd opinion or a specialist appointment?
If you could just think of us this morning, I would appreciate it.

Poor Owen.
I say go with your gut on this one. If you truly feel it could be something more serious than run-of-the-mill baby congestion, I'd look into getting a second opinion. Good luck!
Catching up on sports news...
I think I would be irritated, but I would not seek a second opinion yet unless there were other symptoms that caused me to worry. I know when Nate started daycare, he was snotty for a couple of months at least. He would get a little better, and then it would start all over again. It drove me crazy, especially because it caused me to have "daycare guilt." Have you noticed if the other kids around his class are snotty too?
Definitely incline the mattress and use a humidifer every night.

I always tell parents not to have the daycare guilt. Viruses are part of life. . we all have to get them in childhood so we're immune when we're older. Kids either get them when they're little in daycare or when they start school.?
I know it's probably really frustrating, but I have to agree with the pp's. Unless there are any other symptoms, I'd probably just wait it out. Holly's absolutely had what seems like a chronic cold for a couple of months now (and like pp's, I attribute it to germs at DC, but like bobsbride said, it's now, or later on when they go to school!...so no guilt here). She's just snotty really often. So, we do the humidifier/saline drops/aspirator when it flares up, and it seems to help. It stinks that there's nothing more you can really do for them. :-(
That being said, I can't see the harm in getting a second opinion, or seeing another pedi if you're not getting warm fuzzies from yours... GL! I hope Owen feels better soon!
