FA-30hrs of training

I know every state differs but we have to take the 30 hours of MAPP training before being licensed to FA. We don't plan on contacting our FA program until September but I was wondering how often classes are usually held. Or if there was a place I could find a schedule? I just don't want to get the process started in Sep. to find out that we have to wait another couple months because training already started. (if they only had one class).

Re: FA-30hrs of training

  • I looked for this same information last week, but I wasn't able to find the PS-MAPP schedule for Iowa. I found the schedule for the orientation sessions, but that was it (and even that only went through August). I wondered if they did that on purpose.....maybe so that people wouldn't/couldn't sign up for the training until after they had completed the orientation.

  • I e-mailed a girl I know from my local board who works with DHS, hopefully she can give us some info. I'll let ya know what I find out!

  • I'm sure every county and state is different (for instance, mine requires 40 hours instead of 30).  You generally have to attend an orientation first and pass the background check, and then you start classes.  My county only offers them quarterly (they bump it up to every other month if they have a need).  And those fill up 3-6 months in advance.  I would go to the orientation session and get started and find out when the classes are.  If you don't want to start until after September, you can let them know that now.
  • I know MAPP is good for 5 years. I would get it out of the way if you find an opening. We completed MAPP prior to starting anything also. In our class they talked about how people complete MAPP and then do not do anything with it until a year or so later.
  • I would go ahead and get the process started now if you want to begin classes in/near september.  we made the mistake of waiting until January of this year to attend the info session thinking we'd start the whole process right away...instead we had to wait until march for a class to open up.

    best of luck!

  • In our state they're called PRIDE/STARS classes. (They can't decide on the name, they refer to both), but I think it's similar to what you're talking about.   We had just missed the "march" class by a week! AH!  We "could have" started them in May...but unfortunately, due to low enrollment they pushed that class back to July, so that was a bummer. Ironically then, the two classes that started, were completly filled, and there are people waiting until September.  Fun times :)

The wait time was good for us though (even though at the time we were less than thrilled), because were able to get some stuff done around the house first while we had the time!
