Parenting after a Loss

crap, now what do I do??

I took DD's temp at 4:30 and it was 103. Gave her some motrin and it went down to 102 and then back up to 102.3. Gave her a cool bath, got her out and she was shivering so bad. I wrapped her up in a blanket and she's been fast asleep since 7:00. Just went to feel her forehead and she is BURNING. Should I wake her to take her temp again? Just let her sleep and take it in the morning? I don't know what to do and DH is away. Please help! thanks.

  • I think I would probably wake her and take it again.  I'm sorry that she isn't feeling well  :(

  • wake her.  take her temp.  call the pedi.  you will feel better talking to someone about her temperature.

    poor kiddo (and momma)

  • Is she a heavy sleeper? I have a temporal thermometer that just sweeps across the forehead. So I could take while she's sleeping.

Can you take it under her arm without waking her much? If not, I'd probably let her sleep if you've already given motrin/tylenol until it's time for the next dose. If you're alternating tylenol & motrin it shouldn't be to much longer.

  • Do you have an ear thermometer or something so you can get a ballpark without waking her?

  • I would take it.  Maybe she'll stay asleep, but if not it sounds like she's pretty tired, so maybe she'll go back to sleep easily.  Hopefully she just feels warm and you don't have to go anywhere:(  I'm so sorry you have to do this alone.  Big hugs!
  • I would wake her and take her temp (or try not to wake her and take it).  If it is still above 101, I would call the pedi's night line.
  • it's 102.7. I woke her and she was really out of it and cried a little and went right back to sleep. should I call or let her sleep? how high is too high???
  • i agree you should wake her to take her temp.  i'm sorry she's still not feeling well.
  • if it has been that high all day - i would call.  you've given her tylenol/motrin, you've done a cool bath, etc.

     call your pedi

they might tell you to just hang in there.  fine.  you just hang in there.  but this is their job.  you are NOT bothering them by calling.  it's not super late. and they are ON CALL.  if it isn't you calling, it will be someone else.  you aren't calling about a hang nail - you are a concerned momma.  please call for your own peace of mind

ETA: i just re-read that and i swear i dont mean that in a b!tchy tone.  i can just tell that you are super worried.  you've already had a rough day and baby bahama doesn't need this stress.  please just call.  if more for you than anyone!

I would call the pedi. They can tell you how high is too high and you will feel better knowing that you called and that her temp is under that "too high" mark. At the very least they will just reassure you that you are doing everything right, or they might have more input that might help.

  • Call your pedi.  They might not do anything (I know my pedi's office won't really do much until there's been a fever for a couple of days if there aren't any other symptoms) - but they also might give you some other advice about taking care of her while she's dealing with the fever.

  • Call if it will make you feel better, it always does for me. ?Although usually they just say if it's under 103 Tylenol is fine, and if it's over 103 do a tepid but not cool bath. ?Hugs. ?Kiran has a fever today too, it sucks. ?They look so sad all flushed and listless. ?:-(

  • Oh, and I would take the blanket off if you haven't already.

  • are you giving her tylenol and it's still that high?  I'd call the pedi's urgent care line or take her in to the ER
  • Oh man, Andra... this all just sucks. I wish I was there to come help you. Huge hugs. I don't know what I'd do... do you think she'll go back down easily if you do wake her? I guess this is when one of those crazy thermometers that you can just put on their skin or whatever would come in handy....
  • Oh duh- I just read the rest of the responses. Guess I was a bit late with my advice.

I agree with PP - call the pedi. I think that if you've been medicating her and its still that high it is worth a call. Keep us updated.

  • Have you tried Motrin?  K didn't respond to the first round of Tylenol and was also continuing to go up.  They told me if it was under 105 not to go in.  If you took it rectally, it is a degree higher, so it is really 101.7 (though I know that didn't ease my mind when K's was really high). Does she have any other symptoms or just the fever?  I called the on call line and would if I were you if just to ease your mind... though I still was a wreck all night.
  • please keep us posted.  i'm worried about you both.  :(

  • I would call your pedi... for your own peace of mind if for no other reason.
