Take 2

So I made another cake yesterday with a more relaxed approach in mind. I figured I would make a standard sheet cake and then make cupcakes to go along. But now I think I have scratched that idea. I found a small 6x6 pan and thought it would be good to practice on and maybe if it was small enough use it for his smash cake....well I think im going to use it as the main cake and back it up with the cupcakes.

So here is the final product from yesterday. I added a flag at the top and just played around with the circles on the cake...not sure why but I just thought it needed something. I dont think Im going to use them. I think instead Im going to do really skinny lines on one of the sails.

So here is what I have decided to do for the cupcakes. Im going to use the blue icing like water, and then brown icing for the "boat" part, then make the sails.

As for AT's smash cake I might just make a special cupcake. But so far Im happy with how it turned out. Im no professional....but its getting thereStick out tongue

Re: Take 2

  • OMG that looks great!  We went to a bday party yesterday and she had made a monkey cake.  Im so impressed with all these Moms who have the talent to do this.  I say wrap the board the cake is on in some sort of wrapping paper that will match the cake.  Thats what they did yesterday and it looked great.

Did you see my post about the cupcakes on your blog.  I suggested tootsie rolls for the boat part -- dont know if you saw that or not.

  • Toads great ideas! I like the paper idea alot!

I did see your comment on the tootsie roll....im just wondering if that till be too hard to get the stick through you know? Im using lollipop sticks so Im pretty sure they wont go through a tootsie roll. I thought of using choc icing for the mast next time....so I figured I could use it up on the cupcakes....but I many look around to see what else I can find for the sails.

  • Yeah it might be hard to get lollipop sticks through unless you used a knife and cut a small hole for them?  Icing would work just fine though.

If you wanted to get super crafty with the paper you could do blue for the bottom and shape it kind of like waves and then do white above it for the sky.

I was sitting in bed thinking last night -- do I really have to wait another year to plan another party??  LOL  Then it hit me -- DH's big 4-0 is this year I guess I can start planning for that.

  • Wow - that looks great!  Ok, you've motivated me.  I'm going to work on coming up with an icing today Savannah isn't allergic to.  I want a cute cake too!

  • You could also use Reese's PB cups for the "boat" part on your cupcakes. It would be sturdy, and the lollipop stick would certainly go through.  Good luck - you've done a great job!

  • One more thought -- I dont know how many kids are coming to the party but I would be worried with the PB Cups and food allergies so maybe the herseys minatures of Mikey Ways or something like that instead?  But the PB Cups would be REALLY cute.
