BF question - engorgement

I had my baby on Thursday night around 11:30pm so she is not quite 3 days old yet.  She doesn't not really want to eat very often, but when she does she nurses for around 15 to 20 min.

My milk has not come in yet (at least I don't think it has).  My breasts are very hard and full like my milk has come in, but I am not leaking and when I pump I get a very yellow milk wihch I thought was colustrum (sp?).

My question is am I engorged?  I am worried that they are so hard and full, but I am not getting a let down feeling and I can not pump very much out at a time (like maybe 1/2 an oz).  What should I do about it?  I did not have this problem with my DS so I am a little lost.  It is not really that painfull, so I am just not sure what it is.

Thanks!

Re: BF question - engorgement

  • It is possible that what you are feeling is the preparation. If it is uncomfortable you can try to pump, even better try to get your LO to feed. I had to offer every hour or two after the first few days since my LO did not seem to want to wake and eat. If you are not uncomfortable then just keep putting baby to breast and it will work itself out...amazing how our bodies work! Your baby suckling is much more effective than a pump any day especially for getting out that first thick milk. GL and CONGRATS!!

  • sounds like your milk is starting to come in if they're hard and full. you won't always get that 'let down' feeling so that isn't a good gauge. you could be on your way to getting engorged.

i bet they'll start to feel sore in another day or two when your body is figuring out how much your LO needs.

  • You will know it if you are engorged. It happened to me and it was more painful than childbirth.

I tried a lot of things...taking advil, hot showers, pumping, massaging...I think the only thing that really helps is getting the baby on the breast. My baby never wanted to cooperate.

I would see a lactation specialist if those things dont work.

  • My breasts felt like you describe about 12 hours before my milk came in for real, and I didn't start actually feeling my milk letdown until DS was almost 2 weeks old.  (This was very different from my first DS, so I wondered the same thing.)
