Hey, all! My mom and i have been oohing and ahhing over baby girl clothes ever since i found out i was having a girl....she's gung-ho about buying dresses from 0-3 months, I think it's more practical to at least wait till the 6-12 month range...
any observations? From other boards, i've gathered that the baby will be using primarily jammies/onesies for the first 6 months...when did you start dressing your baby girls in cute, fun outfits?
TIA!
Re: Trying to be practical about buying baby clothes...
It depends...Emerson skipped over 3-6 mo size completely. She grew so fast. Don't buy the cutsie stuff in 0-3. She may end up wearing it for the first four weeks of her life.
I started really dressing Emerson up when she started mother's day out at around 5 months.
I guess I am in the minority here. I regret buying nice outfits for the 1st year, esp 0-3 and 3-6 months. A couple(1-2) nice outfits per age group would have sufficed, as DS was always in jammies and sleepers during the 1st year. I have so many unworn (or worn once) beautiful outfits. Oh well, that's a first time parent for you.
Now that he is standing and walking, I can appreciate the outfits more.
During the first 4 months, we only got her out of onesies and the like a handfull of times for holidays or whatever big occasion. Also before you load up on bigger dresses know that once they start crawling, dresses can easily get in the way.
I have a boy, but the first 2-3 months he LIVED in sleep-n-plays or sleep sack type things. Trust me, when you are changing them 12 times a day and they have blowouts, you don't want them in cute stuff! And you're not really going anywhere where they need to look "dressed up"!
Even now I prefer either all-in-one rompers that look like a onesie with "shorts", or a onesie with pants or shorts. (elastic waist, cotton...)
I bought cute little plaid shirts, even T-shirts... but they ride up and you need a onesie under them, so now in the summer it's pointless...
HTH!
A few cute dresses per age group could work...but chances are you'll lean more towards practicality once you're in the mix of being a new mommy!I agree with pp that said dresses are sort of a hindrance when babies are crawling around!
Emmerson spends most of her time in cute comfy cotton outfits. (Unless we're heading somewhere special) I buy a ton of stuff at Baby Gap. It's pretty affordable, cute and practical. It also washes well. The other brands that I tend to gravitate towards are Tea collection and Zutano. Zutano is great (if you like the mismatched look:O)) but all of their stuff is mix and match and very comfy...washes extremely well, etc. All important things for babies under one, IMO.
Good luck!
Lyla was a pretty average sized baby, born in October.
She wore mostly rompers and onesies/pants for the first couple months in size 0-3. Then when she hit size 3-6 (around 8 weeks old, I think?), I loved putting her in little cotton, long-sleeved dresses with leggings (Zutano and Gymboree, mostly)... she wore those ALL the time. Obviously no bare legs or short-sleeves, since it was the winter (in Pennsylvania).
By the time spring rolled around, she was into size 6-12, and I've dressed her in cute cotton dresses all summer long.
I suppose it depends on your lifestyle. I WAH and it is not uncommon for DS & I to not go out in public for 2-3 days at a time. At home, all he wears are onesies and cotton pants/shorts. If he was in daycare, I might "dress" him more. So he has tons of onesies and cotton pants, a few pairs of jeans and just 2 or 3 "outfits" in each size. I imagine a girl would be the same for us, too.
As PP said, seasonality affects things, too. ?
My girls always had cute outfits--they were mostly sleepers, one pieces & onsies during the first few months, then graduated to simple dresses around 4 months. My oldest didn't wear the really nice fru fru dresses until she was walking (11 months) & they're so cute walking around and trying to twirl.
I love LOVE the Carter's soft cotton dresses--they're too cute & cheap!
Since you are having a winter baby, I would recommend that you mostly buy sleepers and other practical clothes and limit the number of fancy dressy stuff. Think functional and practical and warm for the first 3 months.
