Starting tomorrow morning, I have to pump and dump for approximately 24 hours for a medical test I have to have done. Not that big of a deal (other than I really didn't want to introduce a bottle yet, but so be it). Here's my dilema - how much do I feed my 3 week old. All I have been able to find out (and this was at the hospital

) was that it is based on my son's weight. They did weigh him for me, and he is 6 pounds 11 ounces. They told me to call my pediatrician, which we don't have. I will call our family Dr in the morning, and see what he has to say. If anyone can help me, I'm trying to figure out if I have enough breast milk pumped to make it through tomorrow. I only found out today that I have to pump and dump, so I'm a little concerned about my supply. TIA!!
Re: Can anyone answer my question?
Here's a calculator you can use:
https://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html
ETA: I just realized that calculator isn't as helpful as I thought. I have read that babies need approx. 2 1/2 to 3 ounces per pound of body weight, so I'd plan on having at least 18 to 21 ounces on hand (24 should be safe). (See https://parenting.ivillage.com/newborn/nbreastfeed/0,,77sw,00.html)
Can I ask why you don't have a pediatrician? Who did your baby see for his first visit after you came home from the hospital and for his two week well check?
We believe in using our family Dr since he knows our entire family and history. We strongly believe in him, and are confident that if he feels out of his element or there is something going on that he doesn't feel adept to deal with that he will recommend someone outstanding. He hasn't failed us yet!
Thanks for all the information!
Got it! Sorry for my confusion -- I just wasn't sure from your initial post that your family doctor was your baby's doctor. Sounds like you have someone who works well for you!
