Parenting after a Loss

Naps too long, nighttime too short

Anyone else have a LO (over 6 months) who naps a LOT and then doesn't sleep as long at night?  Kellen wants to wake up for the day around 4:30 lately and then takes a 3+ hour morning nap (which he is currently doing!).  I know we are going to need to do Ferber again because we have been bringing him into bed a lot in the middle of the night when he starts crying.  I don't want him in our bed after a year (for all of our sleeping's sakes).  I am wondering though how long each nap should be?

Re: Naps too long, nighttime too short

  • I think I have read somewhere (could have been the Ferber book or Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child - can't remember because I read them all! Smile) that in order to preserve nighttime sleep that naps should be limited to 2 hours and no naps after 4 pm.

  • Based on what I think I remember reading, and what I've heard from moms whose babies actually nap well, 1-2 hours for the morning is best.  It sounds like he's splitting that last sleep cycle or 2, right?  I think Ferber says something about it in his book.  Good luck!

I think babycenter has a little chart about average sleep by age.  I think 2 naps 1-2 hrs is around 6-12m.

  • M's naps are usually 1.5-2hrs long. Any longer than that and it would disrupt her night time pattern. Even though she wakes in the middle of the night, she's still sleeping. KWIM? She's not up to play. And that cycle is the same no matter what time she naps until in the afternoon. If she naps late, her bedtime is later. That's all.
  • Ditto the others. Sounds like Kellen is splitting his last sleep cycle between 4:30 and whenever that morning nap is. What's going on at 4:30..are you feeding him? Henry still wakes up around then to eat (I am working on stretching him to 5) but then goes right back to sleep until 6:30 or 7:15.
  • No food.  He has been weaned at night for months.  He just wants to play for 30 min to an hour.
  • I have the same problem with my little guy.  He goes to bed so easily at 8pm and sleeps all night but is up between 4:30-5am.  He'll play and then take monster nap in the a.m. for 2-3 hrs! I think i'm going to shorten them to see what happens!
