Name compromise?

So, my husband and I like Charlotte, as I've brought up before; getting really popular and even though it was my beautiful grandmother's name, I'm searching for alternatives...I also like my other grandmother's name, Clarice, but DH will NOT go for it, reminds him of silence of the lambs.

SO...I'm thinking: Clio.  In my head, I can know that it is after my grandmothers, but it will also be a fairly unique name with a cool origin (Clio was a muse in Greek mythology).

Clicky poll: which one do you like better?

Comments: middle names for Clio?  Our last name is 2 syllables and begins with a B.

Re: Name compromise?

  • I love the name Charlotte, and I'm afraid I'm with your DH on Clarice. All I can think of is the movie.

Cleo is not terrible, but I like it spelled better with an e instead of an i.

Seriously, it is a car.  The spelling Cleo is better if you like the name.

EDIT: If you want to prounounce Clarice that way, why not name her Claire Reese Lastname?

  • I was wondering about the spelling...the thing is, Cleo is short for Cleopatra (not the image I'm going for) while Clio was a muse...I'm pretty stuck on meanings and origins to match with spellings I guess.

That is just the proper pronunciation of Clarice.  It's not a common name, so I thought I would post the pronunciation in case someone didn't know.  I don't really like the name Claire....I don't dislike it, it's just nms.

  • I think Clio is a cute name and also think you should stick with the spelling as it is authentic to mythology. And I wouldn't worry about the car reference. I doubt that car is ever going to be very well-known. And if it is, who cares? There are lots and lots of Shelbys and Coopers out there who never get compared to the car.

As for middle names, that's not my thing. Go grab a baby name book or look at other family names. I do think Clio Reese would be cute though.

  • I agree with your H on Clarice....too Silence of the Lambs but I LOVE Charlotte.

  • I am totally with your H on the Silence of the Lambs thing.  Clio looks silly.  Cleo is much better.  Of the three I prefer Charlotte.
  • I think I once saw an infomercial about a psycic hotline where the woman's name was Cleo.  Spelled differently than Clio but that's what it made me think of.  I don't think Charlotte is too too popular yet.  I think it's a lovely name! And I definitely agree with your DH about Clarice(I can hear Anthony Hopkins voice in my head right now!)

Yeah,  I was wondering what that meant. It's the only way to pronounce Clarice. I like Clarice, but not as much as Charlotte, and I hate Clio spelled that way.

  • I love Charlotte, but don't like the other two names. Charlotte is popular, but it's not Emma/Olivia/etc.. popular
  • I am with the majority regarding Clarice-- I just can't think of anything but that movie.

But I actually think Clio is cute and I also think a lot about meanings and origins and think you should stay with this spelling.  For middle names suggestions:

Clio Jane; Clio Adele; Clio Alexandra; Clio Theresa; Clio Victoria

This is who Clio/Cleo reminds me of.  It turned out her accent and everything was fake.  Doesn't sound like a nice name to me.

  • i vote clarice. charlotte is popular [still cute, though] and even though i consider clio a female name, i've only met men named that. unless of course you're pronouncing it like clee-oh and not the traditional pronunciation of cly-oh.

  • I like all three, actually. I think Charlotte is a nice, classic name, but I do think it's creeping up on the popularity scale. I actually love Clarice, especially as a middle name (not so Silence of the Lambs). I think Clio sounds great, and I love that it's different without being too weird. Yes, the spelling is different... I would expect to see it spelled Cleo, but I agree with the pp who said you should keep the original, mythological spelling. Cute name, good story behind it. Go for it!
  • Love Charlotte!  My great great aunt's name was Charlotte and was called Lotte(like Lottie) for short.  I thought it was super cute!  I work at a day care and I dont think there is one Charlotte of the 150 kids that attend, so its not super popular yet.  Not a fan of Clarice or Clio.
  • I know Clio is the correct spelling from mythology, but it still looks ridiculous.  Cleo looks much better.  You also won't risk people saying CLY-oh rather than CLEE-oh.

Clarice...yes, Silence of the Lambs.  I also don't say it like Claire though.  I say Cluh-reese, not Claire-reese.  That's just hard to say, imo.

If you really like Charlotte, go with Charlotte.  I like it the best of those three too.
