2nd Trimester

may be TMI... but really curious about this...

ok. so i know that everyone and every pregnancy is different BUT... i am only 22 weeks along, and already have colostrum. is this normal? im worried that it is WAY too early for me to be producing colostrum, and im worried that there wont be any by time LO gets here and actually needs it. is anyone else experiencing this or should i be concerned??

Re: may be TMI... but really curious about this...

  • I don't think that it's too early.  How do you know?  Are you leaking already?  All of my pregnancy books say you should be producing it already.

  • OMG--I can't believe I am typing this, but after I read your post I squeezed my nipples really hard to see and a tiny bit of clearish liquid came out (I'm 16 weeks). Colostrum is a yellowish color, so I don't have that yet.  I wonder how many girls are going to be checking their boobs and responding lol!
  • I admit it.  I just squeezed my nipples and saw little tiny droplets.  Oh my goodness.

  • I started leaking around 22 weeks. Last night I actually leaked enough from one side to make my shirt wet. (Which DH thought was absolutely hilarious) But it's normal. It happens. And it only gets worse. Big Smile Don't worry, there will be enough for your LO.
  • ok so to continue in my oversharing...

like a week ago i noticed dry looking skin on my nipples and im like WTF is THIS all about??!!? so i squeezed, and a tiny bit of clear liquid came out. since then, ive been squeezing once or twice a day to see and its mainly clearish then the yellow colostrum comes out!! i probably should leave my poor BBs alone and not be squeezing but i cant help it! its so weird and it freaked me out!

side note: i am NOT a lunatic freak child who goes around squeezing her nipples, but this is my first pregnancy, so i am overly curious about everything.

  • I don't think it is to early for you, and from the books I am reading it is about the right time..  I actually have had small amounts before I was pregnant, and this is my first. My doctor just said that it means I will have an easier time breast feeding.

  • Lol, if my poor nipples weren't so sore, I'd probably give it a try, too!
  • Ow. Why did I just do that to myself? And yes, my nips are now wet. Gross and interesting....
  • The book I have says it starts around that time, but I haven't had anything like that happen to me yet.
  • I'll be 18 weeks tomorrow, and I have the little dried up, um, crusties. Not too much, but enough to make me notice it!

If it's true I will have an easier time breastfeeding - then by all means, please start producing colostrum soon, boobs!! :P

  • I'm LMAO right now. I told DH about this thread and said "I'm not squeezing my nipples because if something comes out I'll be too freaked out about it!" So he says to me: "do you want to go to bed and have sex and I won't squeeze your nipples?" Ohhhhh DH <3

  • I had colostrum that early in my last pregnancy (mostly clear) and I had a TON of milk.  Choking the baby kind of milk.  Nobody told me about that before baby came.  Your body keeps making it.  Don't worry.
  • I started leaking around 19 weeks with DS, none so far with this one but I keep my boobs more contained now, habit from EP'ing.  At one time I even leaked a little blood, which freaked me out completely.  Goggle that and you come up with breast cancer, but my doc just said that it was due to my boobs gearing up for milk production and to wear supportive bras as much as possible.

  • wow so yeah I just squeezed and freaked myself out....WTF! The sad part was my Dh just witnessed the whole thing and had a good laugh. I did notice last week that the nips didnt look the same...almost like the skin started to break away a bit and crack. Now this. My poor boobies are never gonna be the same..........
  • OUCH!  Tried it... nothing yet!

  • 19 weeks and nothin yet! lol..I could imagine if someone would've walked in on me squeezing my nippies! haha
  • I have had colostrum since week 18.... In fact, there has been times in my life prior to becoming pg- that I have had fluid... It's normal.
  • I'm 22w3d, and I've been leaking for about three weeks already. The first time, it totally freaked me out. I called my OB first thing in the morning (it's my first pregnancy), and asked if it was normal to start producing stuff this early, and if it meant that I would run out by the time my LO gets here. The nurse said that it's totally normal, and that it did not at all mean that I would have a problem after the baby comes. In fact, she said that, from what she has seen, women who leak earlier tend to have more production post-birth. Not always, but a lot of the time. I was shocked when it occurred; I wasn't expecting it until sometime in the 3rd trimester. DH gets a kick out of it; he'll say "babe, you leaked through your shirt again" and then laugh at me. Sigh.
