I had a my 36 week visit on Friday Jan. 2 2009. I was 36w4d pg. The NP told me I was about 2cm dialated and 70%. She told me I was moving along very well for a first time mom and that she was going to strip my membranes. I made my 37 week appointment and went home,
Saturday came and went like normal. I didn't do much except get a few last minute items I needed for DD and watch the Colts lose in the playoffs. Late Saturday night I began to have light contractions that really didn't feel any different than Braxton Hicks.
Sunday morning January 4, 2009 I woke up at 9:00am on the dot to a very warm and wet sensation. I stood up out of bed and water was running down my leg. I went to the bathroom noticed a little bloody show and called the Dr, I hadn't started having contractions but Dr. told me to pack up and head to the hospital. DH had left about 30 mins prior to take his brother home so I called him and told him we were having a baby! He hurried home and I showered and got ready to go to the hospital. About 10 mins before we walked out the door the contractions started and by the time I got to the hospital (about 30mins) they were coming on pretty strong. I was admitted and then checked to make sure it was infact amniotic fluid. Once we were informed it was I was taken to my labor and delivery room. I called my mom and dad to let them know the news! Its about noon now and the contractions hurt so bad I am nearly in tears. DH is holding my hand while the nurse starts my IV and orders my epidural. Dr. Wong arrives about 12:30, I am 4cm and VERY ready for a little relief. When they told me that DH had to leave the room I broke down. I was very nervous about the epidural but I was in so much pain I tried not to think about it. My nurse was great. She rubbed the back of my neck and gave me words of encouragement and before I knew it the epidural was in. I didn't feel a thing and it was almost instant relief.
DH came back to the room joined by my parents and from then on it was a waiting game. I was moving very slowly and when I was checked again at 6pm I was only 5cm. The shift change came and I told my new nurse she needed to make something happen! At about 8:15 pm I was beginning to feel a lot of pressure and the epidural wasn't helping with the contractions all of a sudden. The nurse checked me one final time and told me I was nearly 10cm. (4.5cm in 2 hrs!) She finished getting the room ready, got the Dr. and at 8:33pm I began pushing. It all seems like such a blur but for 17 short minutes I pushed through about 6 contractions. DD's cord was wrapped once around her neck but other than that the birth was perfect. I had a slight tear that only needed 2 stitches.
The most amazing parts of the experience was being able to see DD born and watch my birth. And being able to share it with DH and my mom.
Kinlee was born at 36w6d onJanuary 4, 2009 at 8:50pm. 5lbs 14oz 19in and perfect in every way.
Re: Kinlee's Birth :)
yes, it is very normal. although epidurals are very common a proceedure like that is considered risky. just bc of the place and risk. i know a lot of people who's fam had to leave the room.
