For those using donor insemination...

My RE requires that the bank be FDA registered, and according to the nurse, there aren't very many. But I looked on the FDA website and searched, and a lot of them are registered, but not for testing. I only found one that was registered for testing as well as everything else. Why would that be? Did anyone else run into this requirement? What bank did you use? Thanks in advance!!

Re: For those using donor insemination...

  • I'm not really sure what they're requiring. We will be using Fairfax, and from what I understand, they are registered and regulated by the FDA?

  • Our clinic requires the same thing.  They also require that they are accredited.

Most of their patients use California Cryobank or Fairfax.  They recommend CA Cryo as their first choice but I found that Fairfax had a better selection of donors that match our requirements and I like their site better.  When we are ready we will probably use one of those 2.

  • I was hoping that California Cryobank would be good - their registration wasn't marked for "testing" on the fda site so I didn't know if my RE would use them. But the donor that DH and I picked out is thru CA Cryo (if he ever makes a new donation, since he recently sold out. Ugh!) so I was hopeful.

I imagine if your RE has the same requirements as mine, then my RE will use the same banks with no problem. I have to ask him myself, but I can't do that until the consult since no one seems to know anything at the front desk. And I'm a bit eager to at least narrow down the donors and bank so I can figure out the steps I'll have to take and how much money I need to save.

    Thanks!

  • Initially I never looked to see if CA Cryo was FDA registered and accredited because my clinic said that is who they prefer and recommend.  However if you go to their website and scroll to the bottom of the home page it says they are accredited and FDA registered.

Hopefully your clinic will be good with CA Cryo.  We know several people IRL that have used them and been very happy with their processes.  I know a couple people on this board have used them too.  It seems like CA Cryo and Fairfax are the most commonly used.
