Giving Shots - NEED TIPS!!

We have to give nightly shots to our little guy.  We just recently switched from a small needle and syringe to a pen device that just sucks.  Before we would wait until he was asleep, just pinch his little skin up and voila, no problems.  Now with this Pen device (which is pretty big) you kind of stab it in there and push a button with your thumb and have to hold it in there for 5 seconds after you stick it in so you make sure you get all of the medicine in there.  With the shots as soon as you got it in there, you were done.  This 5 second stuff is killing us all.  Last night we somehow bloodied the poor kids nose in all the flailing and commotion of trying to give him his shot.  It looked like a child abuse crime scene.  He cried, I cried.  It was just crappy.

ANY SUGGESTIONS would be greatly appreciated.  He fights us so much now and sometimes it even bends the tiny little needle.  We just feel so sorry for him (and deep down I know its no big deal, its not hurting him, its just helping him and lord knows its doing wonders) .  Its just hard.

Re: Giving Shots - NEED TIPS!!

  • We wait until Declan is asleep. Sounds cruel I know but it works out great. He wakes for a second then falls back asleep. The easiest position I found was to put him on his belly and us the fat pad above his butt or just grab his thigh and stick it in.

Funny my endo told me they couln't use the pen until 2 years old due to the preservative. Any way BOTH injections should be held in for 5 seconds, in a perfect world. I just jab, inject and pull out. If he loses a little better than sticking him again or loosing more. I've scratched him a couple times trying to hold it in so I gave up.

  • My recommendation is to try to wrap him up in a blanket all except for his legs.   That way his arms are all tucked in and it will be easier to hold him still.   I know it's not easy, I had to give Ayva a shot every day for 3+ months.  But I told myself that it was for her own good and just sucked it up.

Can you switch back to the basic needle?  I think it might just be easier on the both of you to use something you are more comfortable with.  HTH
