Need advice- peeling baby skin

Little guy's skin is peeling like a snake! Basically from head to toe and all over his belly/chest. I tried using Burt's Bees baby lotion, but it seemed to make it worse and he's splotchy from it. Anyone have any ideas on how to help? Is this normal for their skin to peel this way?

Re: Need advice- peeling baby skin

  • Did you go past 40 weeks? If so, very normal. My ped advised doing nothing, actually. He said that some lotions can irritate their new skin. It all sloughed off by 3 weeks or so.

  • DD had dry peely skin on her legs and tummy.  It all went away without any treatment...I tried lotioning it once but it didn't do anything.
  • Normal - they usually shed a lot of their nb skin in the beginning.  I would just leave it alone.  He'll be fine.  :)

  • if you want to use something i'd suggest a natural oil like olive oil or sunflower oil (though some people avoid sunflower oil because people with nut allergies are often allergic to it as well). we used pharmaceutical grade olive oil on Bruce when he was a newborn and it was great.
  • I should probably start reading those newborn - 1yr baby books lol. I'm glad it's normal. I was starting to worry that I did something wrong to him! But yes, I went to 41 weeks and had to be induced, but I guess if this is the worst thing I have to worry about at this point, I'm doing good! Thanks so much!

  • Just leave it alone. Mine is peeling too, I told DH he is "molting". It will stop eventually but putting lotion on won't stop it. Just do your regular bathing schedule and it will go away on it's own.
