buying your own insurance?

DH is considering a major career move that would require us to purchase our own medical insurance.  This is totally new to us as we've always had insurance through his employer.  Does anyone else do this, any advice?  Can you recommend a good company to get quotes from?  I totally lost on where to start and we have a short time frame to figure it out.

TIA!

Re: buying your own insurance?

  • I went through ehealthinsurance.com when I got my own policy. It was easy.

  • Are you in PPA?  I was just reading their site today and saw that they offered health insurance.  I didn't check into it closely, but might be worth a shot.

  • Thank you!

MC - I AINT GOING NOWHERE.  Yes, I just yelled that.

MrsPurdue - I am a member of PPA and thank you because I never would have thought to check with them.  I should have though because all their member benefits rock.  Of course they would do this too!  Thanks for throwing it out there!

  • what does ppa stand for?

also, could you qualify for cobra? i know that's pricey, but always an option.  if hubby is 'involuntarily' terminated, then you could qualify for the cobra subsidy (as long as his separation from the company occurs before dec 31, 09)

no, he would be leaving one job for another opportunity.  it's just a really bad time for us to be without insurance so we'll have to figure something out.

  • Just wanted to add that family plans for self employees are a real pita if someone has a pre existing condition. For example, my dh has seizures so we can't do a family plan. If that is the case with you, you would have to do it as a business plan under your business name.
