Success after IF

XP: lots of IVF questions

We're trying to make the decision as to whether we should move forward with IVF. I have some major concerns (ethically, emotionally, physically). So if you don't mind sharing...

what was your dx?

how many eggs were they able to extract during your ER?

how many matured?

how many were transferred?

what did you decide to do with your leftover mature, fertilized eggs?

EDITED to correct my bad terminology (sorry I'm still learning!)

Re: XP: lots of IVF questions

  • I am AMA and DH is low morph

8 eggs retrieved for all 3 IVFs that made it to ER

    4, 7, 4 were mature and fertilized

    3, 4, 4 were put back

The last one worked and 3 implanted. Third heartbeat stopped at 8 weeks

We were hoping we would have some to freeze to use later but none made it.

  • Diagnosis:  Elevated FSH, Diminished Ovarian reserve, low estrogen, poor egg quality and MFI.

Eggs retrieved:  IVF #1 - 12 eggs 8 fertilized and 3 made it to a 3 day transfer the others arrested with 24 hours of fertilization.  IVF #2  - 10 eggs 8 fertilized 4 made it to a 3 day transfer.

Transferred:  Embryos are transferred NOT implanted.  With both cycles we transferred what we had because none we viable for freezing.

Leftovers:  If we had anything to freeze we would have frozen them for later use.  We had nothing to freeze.

  • I'm actually not pregnant through IVF, but we did four IVFs (1 was cancelled, so maybe 3 1/2), so here's my info in case it helps:

what was your dx? DOR and AMA

how many eggs were they able to extract during your ER?  In the three non-cancelled cycles -- 7, 1, and 7.

    how many matured?  6, 1, and 5.

how many were implanted?  3, 0 (didn't fertilize), and 4.

what did you decide to do with your leftover mature, fertilized eggs?  We were going to donate them to research in the unlikely event we had any left over, but we never had any make it to freeze.

  • My dx was endo/PCOS/partial left ovary/partially blocked left tube.

    15 eggs with IVF#1 and 20 eggs with IVF#2

IVF#1 all were mature and with IVF#2 16 were mature

IVF#1 transferred 3 but they were poor quality and IVF#2 tranferred 2 great quality.

DH and I decided to freeze the remainders and we now have 11 snowbabies.  If we decide not to use the frozen embryos, we will look into embryo adoption.

    what was your dx?  MFI

how many eggs were they able to extract during your ER? 8

how many matured? 6 eggs were mature; 4 fertilized with ICSI.

how many were implanted? We transferred one 5-day embryo.

what did you decide to do with your leftover mature, fertilized eggs? We froze the 2 other embryos that made it to day 5; the last one arrested before day 5. We hope to achieve future pregnancies with the 2 frozen embryos.

After 7 failed IUIs, IVF w/ ICSI worked!!

I am thankful every day for my miracle after infertility.

And thrilled to be pregnant again after FET!

  • Technically we were unexplained I guess. DH was fine, all issues were on my side. I did have some Stage 1 endo removed about 6 months prior to IVF #2, but RE swore it had nothing to do with IF (it was minimal).

I'm a little hazy on the details but this is what I remember with IVF #2.   We had 14 eggs retrieved. 13 were mature. 11 fertilized naturally. 3 were transferred (not implanted) on day3, 2 frozen at day 6.

We attempted fertillzation with all mature eggs and froze the 2 embryos that didn't get transferred.

  • We are unexplained.

    They got 17 eggs.

    13 were mature.

    2 embryos were transferred.

We have the other embryos in storage right now but will probably donate them to science/research. ?

Keep in mind that lots of people don't have extra embryos to worry about storing/using/donating. ?We didn't on our first IVF. ??

  • what was your dx?

I had premature ovarian failure and/or poor ovarian reserve.  My eggs seemed to be few and far between....plus I had a high FSH of 13.

how many eggs were they able to extract during your ER?

They actually got 10, but were shooting for 5.  They shot me up with high dosages of Follistim, and after 6 days of no response, mixed in some Menopur.  It was sooo stressful, but that second week of stimming I started to produce some follicles.

    how many matured?

They got 10 mature eggs out of me, 8 fertilized, and 5 made it to day 3.

    how many were transferred?

My RE wanted to transfer 2 excellent embryos, but given the fact that I had never been pregnant and my eggs were just so iffy, I asked to put back 3.  They agreed and put back 3 excellent embryos at day 3.

what did you decide to do with your leftover mature, fertilized eggs?

We wanted to freeze the 2 leftover, but they didn't make it.

FYI, I got pregnant with a singleton (girl).  She is a healthy & happy 15 month old now.  Good luck!

  • Our dx is PCOS and MFI (low morph, count, and mobility).  We did IVF with ICSI twice.

I believe they retrived around 20-22 eggs both times, and each time we ended up with about 7 or 8 fertilized embryos.  Both times they transferred two embryos.  The first time we had a chemical pregnancy.  The second time I was pg with twins, but lost one at about 10 weeks.  We did a 3-day transfer both times.

We froze 2 embryos from the first cycle and 3 more from the second.  We are keeping them frozen for a future FET (frozen embryo transfer).

    Best of luck to you!

  • what was your dx? Endometriosishow many eggs were they able to extract during your ER? 9how many matured? 8 were mature, 7 fertilizedhow many were transferred? 2 what did you decide to do with your leftover mature, fertilized eggs? 2 were high enough quality to freeze, the rest were discarded. I don't have ethical issues w/ it though. The 2 frozen were transferred a few months later & I'm pg with twins now.If we had any left over & didn't want to use them for siblings later, we would have donated to science. GL!!!
  • what was your dx?  At the time our dx was unexplained.  The day after the ER we found out we had a MFI issue. how many eggs were they able to extract during your ER?  22how many matured?  I think there were 17 that were actually mature.  Two fertilized abnormally, 1 fertilized normally, and 14 didn't fertilize at all (due to the MFI issue.) how many were transferred? Just 1 was transferred since that was all we had.  The original plan was to transfer two if we had two good ones.  what did you decide to do with your leftover mature, fertilized eggs?    If we had had any leftover we would have froze them for future cycles.
After THREE years, our IVF miracle is here!!!

  • My dx was low progesterone/unexplained.

They retrieved 19 eggs, 14 fertilized, 2 were transferred. I didn't have any that made it to freeze, so we didn't have to make any decisions about what to do with leftovers.

    Good luck to you!

  • Dx:  Unexplained - no MF issues or anything...just me not quite working properly!

    # eggs:  11

    Mature:  9 - all 9 fertilized

    Transferred:  2 grade A 8-celled (3dt)

    Frozen:  3

Our cycle wasn't originally set up as IVF - it was a cycle we had to convert from an IUI due to too many follies.

  • what was your dx? Unexplained IF

how many eggs were they able to extract during your ER? IVF #1 (BFN)= 13, IVF #2= 11 (BFP)

    how many matured? #1=7, #2=8

how many were transferred? #1=2, #2=3 (pg w/ singleton)

what did you decide to do with your leftover mature, fertilized eggs? #1= 2 made it to freeze, stored. #2= 4 made it to freeze, stored. We have 6 total in storage which will give us 2 attempts to try for #2. If we don't need to use them all, we will donate them to science.
