Glucose Test in the AM

I am having my Glucose tolerance test at 9:10 tomorrow morning, only problem is I either A) dont remember being told if I could eat or not due to the news I got that day from OB or B) he failed to tell me. I am thinking more along the line of A because we found out we needed to see a perinatologist that day due to some findings on our "BIG" ultrasound. But anyway, does anyone know if I should fast or not, I trield to google it but there are such different answers.

Re: Glucose Test in the AM

  • I had a pre-lim glucose tolerance test at 10 weeks and they said that I could eat just to not have a really sugary breakfast

  • I have mine next week. My doc said not to fast, I could have something in the morning, like whole wheat toast w/ peanut butter. She said not to have any juice, soda, or milk (since lactose is a suger) and steer clear of anything with added suger at all. And drink lots of water apparently
  • I have mine next week and I was not told to fast.  With my last pregnancy I was also not told to fast and I had breakfast and lunch.

    Good luck.

  • No soda, no carbs, no sweets. They don't fast pregnant women, just make them miserable with a bland breakfast. Stick to protein and veggies, easy on fruit.. at least yours is in the morning, mine was at 2pm.. I was so hungry I brought two granola bars with me to consume directly after the blood was drawn.
  • I was told I didn't *have* to fast with DS and I ended up failing and having to take the 3 hour (for which you do have to fast.)  I am planning on double checking w/ the OB, but I'm planning on fasting for the 1 hour this time.  I think my sugar was high anyway and that's why I failed.  If I can go a lifetime and never take the 3 hour again it'll be too soon.

While you shouldn't fast per se (especially if your test is in the afternoon) you shouldn't eat anything immediately prior to the test.  My instructions were to not have anything to eat 3 hrs prior to the test.  Since my test is at 8:30 AM, I will have to skip breakfast because I don't envision getting up at 5:00 to eat something.
  • I'm going tomorrow morning, too! My doc said nothing to eat or drink after midnight -- water if I need it.
  • I'm having mine this morning, too! Mine's at 10:00am. I forgot I wasn't supposed to eat and had two nectarines, but I've been up since 4:00am since hubby had to go to work early and I couldn't get back to sleep.

     Good luck!
