First time DH feeding baby with pumped milk

I only pump once in the AM and usually freeze it but have some running around to do tomorrow so was thinking of pumping for him to feed him.  Any experience with this?  Do I put it in the fridge?  Does he somehow heat it before he feeds lil man?  I know usually BF milk is room temperature.  And should let him feed through the medela bottle it comes with or I have the playtex drop ins.  Any advice would be great.  Or do you think its too early to try this at all?

  • You can just put in in the fridge -- it's fine in the fridge for 5-7 days.  I always transferred it into the drop ins bottle from the medela bottle because my LO didn't like the nipple on the medela.  :)

  • If breastfeeding is well established (latching well, etc.), then I think it's a good time to try it.  However, I would suggest not going too far, because some babies don't take to the bottle right away (like mine).  If you pump it the AM, it's good at room temp for up to 5 hours, so you don't need to refrigerate.  You can try giving it at room temp, and if he doesn't take it, you can try heating it a little (my DD likes it much warmer than room temp).  As for which bottle to use, it doesn't matter.  I had to try 8 different bottles before finding one my DD would take -- which ended up being the first one we tried!  GL!

  • You can keep it in the fridge, it will be good that way for several days.  My little guy likes it warmed up a little bit...just place the bottle in a larger cup/mug of warm water to let it warm up.  You could see which nipple your little one likes better, mine did not care for the madela ones so we use Dr. Browns.

  • My LC suggested waiting until 3 weeks, but I'm sure there are differing opinions out there.
IMO, I would have DH do the first bottle when you are actually in the house.  That way DH isn't stuck with an insanely hungry baby if DC refuses to take it.

  • We just did the first bottle yesterday. We warmed up the milk in a mug of water until it was a bit warmer than room temperature (I had pumped it earlier so it was in the fridge). We used the Medela bottles simply because I hadn't sterilized the Dr. Brown's bottles yet. We'll try a Dr. Brown's bottle next time.

She took 3 oz. very quickly and was still hungry so I nursed for a few extra mintues. Next time I'll make sure to have more available to DH because apaprently our child is a pig.

This.  My DS is having a really difficult time taking to the bottle.  I never expected it - and its meant I have yet to go out and run errands/enjoy myself with friends while DH gives a bottle because I have yet to be able to trust that DS will take the bottle and take enough to be full.  We're currently working on trying various types to find which one DS likes best.  Its definitely been a process for us...
