Adoption

books for dh to prepare for adoption/ fatherhood

i've only posted on here a few times, dh and i are in the process of narrowing down agencies for ia from russia. while we've obviously discussed adoption and i've given him lots of information about many different agencies, i think it would help him a lot if there was a book specifically directed toward adoptive fathers to help him understand the whole process a little better.

it's more difficult for him than it is for me because i've planned to adopt my whole life and i just don't think he ever really thought about it. since the process will be months of anxious waiting, i'd appreciate if any of you could recommend books that might help dh feel less freaked out at the prospect of suddenly becoming a dad.

just in case i wasn't clear, he isn't opposed to adoption, he just seems a little nervous [like any father-to-be] about adjusting to having a child and maybe more so because it's a less conventional way to go about it so we don't have as many close friends with the same experience.

recommendations of books directed toward adoptive fathers or just fathers-to-be in general that you think are good resources would be greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance Smile

  • I haven't read any of these, but adopting.org has this list:

  • My husband hates to read so he only reads really entertaining stuff. I thought this book sounded funny so I bought it for him. I've actually read some of it. It's not a "serious" book but talks about some really funny stuff that dads go through.?

Daddy Needs a Drink by Robert Wilder

As an example one of the first chapters I read is a story about the dad taking the family to Macaroni Grill (because that's where all the other families go) for a night out. He wanted all the other people there to notice what a good dad he was so he offered to take the baby to the bathroom for a diaper change. He discovered no changing table so he changed the baby on the counter. As soon as he got him/her undressed they let out a poop rocket that sprayed everything including the mirror. He talks about the horror of trying to clean up baby poop in a restaurant bathroom with men giving him the stink eye but no one offering to help. Plus he forgot a change of clothes. I almost peed my pants reading this from a man's point of few. ?

  • psu, that's funny! and thank you both for your suggestions!
