Babies: 9 - 12 Months

what to bring on long car ride

In 3 weeks we will be driving up to NY and its like a ten hr. drive....DS will be 10 mos. old and he will not sleep the entire drive :( So what should I bring to keep him entertained? I really dont want to have to sit in the back w/him (I get carsick in the backseat on long drives), do I need to get a mirror? This is going to be a disaster huh?

Re: what to bring on long car ride

  • I'm doing a 12 hour drive next month with my 10 month old as well.  I have bought some new smaller toys that she can play with in the car seat that I haven't given to her.  She'll get to play with them for the first time on the ride.  I figure they may occupy her longer since they'll be new to her.

I'm just planning on lots of stops so she can get out of the carseat and stretch her legs so to speak.  We will have someone in the back with her since my mom is driving with us too.  Thankfully my DD does really well in the car so I'm hoping she'll do ok.  GL!!!

  • i just did a 10 hr drive w/ sister and DD last wk.  not too bad, actually.  have plenty of toys handy and pacis (if he uses one).  we do have a mirror so we can play peek-a-boo.  also, DD loves to tear up napkins, paper, tissue, etc - that entertains her for good chunks of time!  messy for me, but so worth it.  also, sippy cup/bottle and puffs are lifesavers.  good luck!
  • When he was 6 mos. old we did a 5 hr. drive....slept almost the entire way (woke up 20 min. before we got to the destination)....but we just drove to Myrtle Beach last week (1 1/2 hrs. from me) and he only slept 1 hr. so I'm not counting on him sleeping that long anymore.

Paper towels to rip up are a good idea....DS loves that as well...and I like the idea of bringing new toys...and tons of Raffi cd's!

  • I sit in the back with DS on any car ride longer than a half hour because it just makes life easier. But toys that make sounds or light up definitely entertain DS more on car rides than other toys. Also, board books to read and show him. And I agree that you'll want to stop fairly often to get your LO out of the car and "stretch." It will make the trip longer, but happier.

We're driving from Cincinnati to North Carolina's shore tonight.  We're leaving after DS falls asleep as that's when dh gets home from teaching his night class.  We're planning on driving as far as we can (we're both night owls), and rotating sleep tomorrow.  The hope is that we get there about 9/10 tomorrow morning.  DS usually wakes up around 830/9, so we shouldn't have much longer than when we get there.  We aren't taking the fastest route, but the more heavily travelled one so we have more places to stop if needed.
