U/S during AF? (possible TMI)

My IVF was converted to an IUI, and my baseline day is tomorrow.  I'm still going, and on the same schedule, just with reduced meds.  So I was on BCP and am currently on Lupron.

I spoted yesterday, and AF is here today with a vengeance.  My question is, is it normal to have an u/s done on CD3 while you have AF?  I felt like an idiot leaving a voicemail at my RE's office to ask this question, but am just afraid they'll want to reschedule my appointment.  I don't mind, but they might!  lol

Re: U/S during AF? (possible TMI)

  • I think they still do bc I have AF now and have to go in tomorrow for u/s. I know it's disgusting.

  • Almost everyone is still bleeding at the CD3 u/s. It's perfectly normal. They'll just lay down this gauze 18x18 medical pad at the end of the exam table before you sit down.

I thought it was funny last time. I mean, I know I had AF but it's not like I was going to start massively oozing everywhere. The pad was pretty big but I guess it's better to be safe than cleaning up someone else's AF blood. =)

  • Yes, it's totally normal.  I've had it done a bunch of times.  No worries.

  • It's totally normal.  They always do a day 3 ultrasound and most people would be expected to still be bleeding at that point.  My office just puts an extra little covering over the paper on the table, so you can just toss it in the trash when they are done and you don't have to be embarrassed by leaving the table bloody when you leave the room.  However, it's never actually ended up being messy when they've done it.  I was uncomfortable at first, but it's really not a big deal.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • We all have gone through it and REs have done it a million times. The first time you will be uncomfortable, but the pad the table you lie on pretty good, use a condom on the wand and rubber gloves. They will also allow you a minute in the ladies room before hand to clean up a bit. Hopefully this will be your only cd3 u/s, but you will get used to it and not think twice should you have to do it again.

As my mother said to me, if this is the worst thing a doctor has seen they need a new career.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!

Yes it is normal and we have all had one!  You will be weirded out the first time but after that they aren't that big a deal.  And, your RE and u/s tech constantly do CD3 u/s so they know what to expect!

    Good luck!

  • Ok, cool.  Thanks ladies!  I'm sure the nurses at the RE are replayingmy message for everyone, giggling at me, and pawning my appointment off on a newbie.
  • What do they hope to find on a CD3 u/s???

It's an IVF baseline appointment, but my IVF was concerted to an IUI.  I believe they are checking my ovaries to make sure there aren't any cysts and that they are fully suppressed from the BCP and Lupron.  I'm sure they'll also take a look at the thickness of my lining. They do b/w as well to look at estrogen and progesterone levels.

  • Yup!  I just had an u/s on Tuesday with AF.  I asked my nurse before I went to make sure it was ok (and it wasn't going to gross out the u/s tech) and she said it was totally fine.
