Making Solids...

Can anyone give me tips/hints on how to do this?  I believe I want to give it a try but I'm confused. Okay, bare with me...

This week, he's been eating rice cereal without any problems. I'm going to feed him a new food every 7 days.  So, next week I want to try maybe squash (my aunt gave me some from her garden).  I figure I will steam it, then use a food processor to puree it.  Of course I will make more than one nights worth.  But, what do I do with the rest?  Do I freeze it?  Then microwave it the next night? How long will the purees last in the fridge?

The next problem...let's say squash is a success (no allergies)  Eventually, it's going to go out of season.  What do I do then?  Do I just buy a lot of squash now and freeze it whole?

As you can tell, I'm not a cook by any stretch of the imagination.   Any advice? And after reading this, you are more than welcome to tell me I need to stick to feeding the baby from a jar. Embarrassed

Re: Making Solids...

  • If you are making squash, I'd keep enough in the fridge for 2-3 days, and freeze the rest in 2 oz portions.

If squash turns out to be one of his favorites, you could certainly make some more to freeze for when it's not in season, but honestly I just made whatever they had at the store, so that way she gets to try more stuff. Her standard faves- sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, pears, blueberries, and mango are always available at the store, so other than that I just buy and serve what's in season.

Good luck! Feel free to ask all the questions you need to. It's one of those things that seems really confusing until you start doing it, then it'll make more sense.
