Success after IF

A VERY TMI post inside....

I can't even believe I am going to post this.  I will probably delete it later to save some of my dignity.

But, I could really use some advice on this matter.

Anyway.....In the past week, it seems as though I have gotten one of the lovely side effects of pregnancy......hemorroids.

I noticed it the other day and it is VERY painful.  I have tried over the counter stuff and nothing is taking away the pain.  The other day, while applying some cream, I kinda felt back there.  It seems as though I have 4-5 VERY large external hemorroids.  Some are as large as a blueberry.

They are very painful, and the location seems (to me) like they might be "blocking the flow" if you know what I mean.

Of course, I have been trying to get rid of a killer cold for almost 2 weeks now.  I can't even really cough 100% because of how painful it is.

I really do not know know what to do.  My next doctor's apointment is not for a few weeks.  Should I continue using the over the counter stuff and hope it gets better (anyone have a great product - I have just been using the Prep-H stuff).

Do I call the OB and ask to be seen now?  What could she really do?  Is this something that would have to wait until after delivery if some kind of procedure has to be done?

If you got this far, thanks for reading.  And I apologize in advance if I actually delete this post.

  • Don't apologize!  I think it's pretty common from what I've heard.  If it were me, I'd ask to go see the doctor pronto.  No sense in being uncomfortable and maybe they can give you some prescription stuff to help better than the OTC.  Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

  • Not uncommon at all!! This is what I used... tucks pads. You can wipe with them and also put a pad in your underwear and line it with tucks pads (feels very nice)! I like the tucks pads better than the prep H wipes - they're moister. I also used the prep H suppositories... it took a couple of days for them to really go away. You may also want to use colace (if you're not already) so you don't have to push as hard when you go.

I hope you can find some relief soon!!

  • No need to be embarrassed we've all eiher been there or are experiencing these things right now.

Anyways since you have tried the OTC products and they are not working I would suggest calling your OB and talking to the nurse or if you can see your OB I would make an appt.

I had really bad hemmeroids while PG and PP and needed a prescription for meds to clear it up.

  • Don't be embarassed - this is a SUPER SUPER common but crappy thing to happen. Happened to me at 37 weeks and I had thought I was out of the woods - grrr. LOL

Anyway, the best thing I found was Prep-H GEL (not the other stuff it has to be GEL) and then I got some Tucks Pads and basically everything they sell over the counter.

Mine were okay after using some stuff for a couple of days but I had to be religious about it or they'd hurt BAD!

Expect them to burst - sorry if TMI but at least you'll know whats going on. Not all do but if you expect it, then you won't be worried.

If the pain is unbearable, you absolutely should go in and be seen.

    Sorry hun!
  • Well, I'm one of the lucky people that gets hemmoroids without even being pregnant (in what world is that fair?)  Anyway, I've had them for years and here are some things that may help relieve the pain and discomfort.

Warm baths if you can.  Sitting in shallow water for about 15 minutes will help the blood flow and help the flair go down.  They also make something called a Sitz Bath which is an attachment for your toilet that you fill with warm water and soak your bottom for a couple of minutes.  But I find a regular bath works just fine.

Sit on a heating pad.  Again, the warmth will help the blood flow and the flair should subside.

I like the Preparation H Cooling Gel.  It comes in the same package as the regular Preparation H, only the label is light blue.  I feel as though it gives quicker relief.

Finally, stool softener.  It will help "pass things" with less effort and thus not irritate the 'roid.

Unfortunately, none of these are instant remedies, but they should help with the pain and keep the hemmoroids at bay.

    Good luck!

  • I'm sorry, that sounds very unpleasant! I haven't expierenced hemorroids (not yet anyway! knock on wood) but I just want to say that you have nothing to be embarrased about. These message boards are here for us so that we can hide behind a computer.Smile

Anyway, I did some Googling and got this...

?  Apply an ice pack (with a soft covering) to the affected area several times a day. Ice may help decrease swelling and discomfort. Some women find cold compresses saturated with witch hazel to be soothing.

?  Soak your bottom in warm water, in a tub or a sitz bath. A sitz bath is small plastic basin that you fill with water and position over your toilet, allowing you to submerge your rectal area simply by sitting down.

?  Try alternating cold and warm treatments. Start with an ice pack followed by a warm sitz bath.

?  Gently but thoroughly clean the affected area after each bowel movement using soft, unscented, white toilet tissue, which causes less irritation than colored, scented varieties. Moistening the tissue can help, too. Many women find using pre-moistened wipes more comfortable than using toilet tissue. You can buy medicated wipes (such as Tucks) made specifically for people with hemorrhoids.

?  Ask your healthcare practitioner to recommend a safe topical anesthetic or medicated suppository. There are many hemorrhoid-relief products on the market, but consult your practitioner before trying one on your own. Most of these products should be used for a short course of treatment only (a week or less). Continued use can cause even more inflammation.

When should I call my practitioner?

If your own preventive and relief efforts don't help ? or if you notice bleeding ? consult your doctor or midwife. (Any rectal bleeding should be checked by your practitioner.)

For most women, hemorrhoids will get better after delivery with the help of the measures discussed above. In some cases, you may need to see a specialist for treatment to help shrink your hemorrhoids. Rarely, minor surgery is required to correct the problem.

  • Thanks ladies, I will try some of the OTC stuff you said.

And thanks for not making me feel like a freak :)

  • they are more common than you think. They are also more painful than people who have never have them think, too.

I hear good things about a tea tree oil cream for relief, but it won't do too much to heal them. ES Prep H is nice, but do the supppositories like a faithful servant if you want them to go away. Get a "donut pillow" at drug stores that carry a lot of handicap and medical supplies, and sit on that, and if you really just want to be done with them, get in with a doc and have them zapped off.

And I'm afraid you should be prepared for them to come back with vengance with birth. Do everything you can to have soft soft soft stools - colace twice a day, mirilax if necessary on a REGULAR basis, extra fiber, and plenty of water.

So sorry. never had the external grapes, but did have an (internal) fischer once. ouch.

  • Don't know if you're still checking, but I just went through this a few weeks ago.

There are rx creams with lidocaine in them, so if you are still very uncomfortable with everything everybody else described, get in and see your provider, because the lidocaine worked for me when nothing else did.

I had/have the external ones too.  This wasn't clear to me until I was into the course a little bit:  they are VERY VERY painful for the first 2-4 days.  Then, the pain/discomfort gets much better or goes away entirely (mine is gone), however, leaving the bumpy souvenirs behind.  I still have the grapes back there and HATE them.  They can do procedures both to relieve the acute discomfort and procedures to make the bumps go away.  I figure I'll wait until after delivery and then ask about seeing someone to have them removed.

ps: miralax is a bit expensive, but awesome (it's over the counter)
