Stupid question about second hand smoke...

So my boss usually comes up to the office to drink, smoke some cigars and do do some work after hours.  Well his cigars make the office smell like crud.  Last night was one of those nights.  I know that when you're pregnant you obviously shouldn't smoke or be near somebody that smokes while they are smoking but do you think that breathing in the leftover odor is bad?  Our office is a old house and so the smell doesn't take long to make it's way throughout the building.  Anyway, one of the girls said that maybe I should bring it up with the boss and maybe he'd stop.

Re: Stupid question about second hand smoke...

  • Being an ex-smoker, I would be VERY concerned about this.  What you need to be concerned about is not the first or second hand smoke but the third hand smoke (this is a newer term).  Third hand smoke is the smoke (and chemicals) that settle in the fibers of your office.  They say that third had smoke can actually be worse than second hand smoke because the chemicals become more consentrated in the fibers of your office.  It is most concerning if say a parent were to go to a smoky bar then come home and hold their child and the child has its nose against dad's shirt where the chemicals have settled.  But it is still in the fibers of your office and therefore, you are breathing that in.  The third hand smoke is still mostly being researched but just the fact that it is there would make me concerned.

  • I don't think it's a stupid question at all. I know I would have a really hard time handling the stench, especially with a heightened sensitivity to smell and motherly protective instincts kicking into hyperdrive.

I don't know that I would have had the balls to say anything though. I guess it depends on your relationship with your boss? GL.

    Dear Bump: You suck.

Thanks.  I actually have a really great relationship with the boss and he was super excited to hear that I'm pregnant.  Plus the whole office always teases him about how his cheap cigars make the office smell like complete @ss every chance we get.  So hopefully he'll take it well.  I just need to do some more research into it before I bring it up to him.  Hopefully I can get him to quit for at least through the pregnancy.

Here is an article that might be helpful: https://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/03/health/research/03smoke.html

Cool!  Thank you!  The article says it's bad for children but I wonder if it's bad if I'm pg.  Off to google!
