Fly vs Drive....

If you were going to Orlando for 4 nights with an almost 9 month old, which would you do? Factor in that you'd need to rent a car when you got down there, if you flew, which could be costly in additional to the cost of the flight. You'd also need to lug a stroller and probably your own convertible carseat.

And tell me why you'd choose one over the other. Smile

TIA!

Re: Fly vs Drive....

  • I'd fly.  I hate the drive down to Orlando.  I hate driving in FL, in general.
  • Loading the player...
  • Fly for sure. I really can't imagine being in the car for 9+ hours with a 9 month old. Although it will be a pain to lug a stroller, you can check the car seat. If she has a hard time with the trip 9 hours is a LONG time. And you can't pick her up. If you are on a plane you can pass her back and forth between you and your DH. Plus there are people to look at... we have traveled a lot with dd and I wouldn't drive more than about 4-5 hours with her.
  • Fly.. On occassion we have to drive 5.5 hrs to see my inlaws and it is so taxing on all of us that we are exhausted the entire trip plus the days following the trip.  The 9 hour trip would realy be more like 10 or 11 hours with all the stops for diaper changes, feeding, fussy baby etc. Flights are pretty cheap right now so I think the extra money spent would be well worth it.
If you are staying in Disney you would not necessarily have to rent a car. I know a lot of people who fly down and never rent a car.
  • I would probably drive because I just prefer to drive if at all possible...flying to me is just kind of a hassle and especially given that you would have to take a stroller and a carseat for the rental car, etc. etc.  I wouldn't drive to Miami, but 9 hours to Orlando with breaks would be doable to me.  It's basically a straight shot down 95 too so a pretty easy drive from Raleigh.

  • We drove recently - Ella was 3 months old.  It wasn't as bad as I thought.  She slept most of the way and at her age too, she's easily entertained.  We started around 4PM and drove through the night.  Now the drive back wasn't fun b/c we were so tired, but all in all - I would drive again.  Also - it was nice to be able to bring everything you needed without having to worry about lugging it on a plane.

  • I agree with MrsLee... I really think that flying is less of a hassle.

I wanted to add that you might be able to borrow stuff from Disney. Like rent a stroller if that is more work than you want to deal with. Plus if you are staying on Disney property you probably don't need a rental car... they might have a shuttle service that could pick you up at the airport.

  • FLY. That is a looooong drive for a 9 month old- Holly might be mobile or almost mobile by then and she is not going to want to sit in that carseat for that long. I pull out all the tricks I know for our 4-4.5 hour trip to SC and it's still exhausting b/c she usually ends up crying at some point.

  • Have you checked out Mousesavers.com?  https://www.mousesavers.com/rentalcar.html  tons of great info there -- and you can rent carseats often with a car.  Or you can google car seat rentals in Orlando.  Since this area is pretty well known for being a tourist destination there are companies set up where you could rent stuff if you didnt want to lug it.  I think the one on Cruise critic that got good reviews was a baby's best friend or something like that.

Personally -- that far, Id fly.  Kids need less on vacation than most people think. You can gatecheck your stroller and Id only take an umbrella not a travel system one -- and you can check the carseat -- or rent one!  :)

  • I would drive, and do it overnight.
