Adoption

Medication question when filling out paper work..

in the 20millionth form we are filling out the medical on has me worried. when I started with the fertility treatment my Doc gave me a low dose of antidepressant because everything was making me cry. I just stayed on it.  I worried they will look down own that because in the classes in conversation she said to everyone it standard stuff they want to make sure you are not crazy, committed a crime you know that kind of stuff.  I cant help but think we are constantly being evaluated and that ok because we are but I was wondering if anyone had a problem when fostering is it a bad thing to take that medication in there eyes?TIA

  • I'm not a ?regular poster on here but I can help you with this answer (I think). ?DH and I plan to adopt in the future and I have a history of mild depression - I have taken low doses of antidepressants on and off since about 15. ?I did a lot of research on this and it seems like some other countries (so for IA) have trouble with any sort of mental illness diagnosis but for DA and foster programs as long as its something that you sought treatment for, its not regarded as a detriment. ?HTH.

Exactly.  There are many other countries that do ban prospective adoptive parents who have ever taken antidepressants or have a history of depression.  In the US, agencies usually ask to make sure that you have any similar conditions treated and/or under control.

  • i am not sure if this is a help, because i'm not as familiar with fostering - but on our medical release form, our doctor signed off that we are mentally able to handle adopting. Even though you are on a mild anti-depressant, is that something your doctor can confirm?
  • yes she would. Thanks for your help!
