Laptop and other electronics in hospital

So I think it'd be nice to have my laptop with me in the hospital, to email pictures, check email, update my blog (I recognize it's foolish to think I'll have time for all this...)  It'd also be nice to have my fancy digital camera, to take those pictures.   And my ipod, to play soothing music.  However, we're now talking ~$2000 in electronics in a pregnant woman's room.  And when I leave my room to wander the halls, hysterically trying to go unmedicated, I will leave all this in the room.  I'm not saying hospital workers aren't trustworthy, but it seems like a lot of valuables to be leaving around.  Anyone have any thoughts on this?  I'm undecided what to do.  I certainly don't want to have to worry about them, but they'd certainly be nice to have.

Re: Laptop and other electronics in hospital

  • We'll be bringing the whole kit and kaboodle. Our rooms are private and have a large dresser type thing built into both sides around the bed, so we'll just hide them in there if we leave the room.
  • Loading the player...
  • Maybe leave them in the car while you're in labor, then have DH or someone else bring them to your room afterwards.

Or maybe check with the nurses to see if there's a closet or drawer in your room that locks.

  • We have private rooms and the floor is locked off from the rest of the hospital to begin with. You have to sign in to get access, so if there was an unfortunate incident, they can easily track down who it is.

i mentioned below about this being the main reason why i am not bringing my laptop- we will already have our digi cam and camcorder and i dont see a need to worry about stuff thats left unattended- like if there is a c-section or something and no one is in the room- or if we share a room which is a possibility in my hospital... in addition we will be going thru 3 different rooms our entire stay- triage room, delivery and then recovery room... so i dont want dh to have to lug it all or even misplace it!
  • I thought about that, I am taking laptop and my photo equipment with all lenses and stuff, but I will have my mom and stepfather with us, so they will have to take care of that while my husband and I go to the operation room..?
  • My phone and camera will live in my bag so there is only one thing to grab and take along when we move rooms, and they are out of sight.  DH will bring my laptop back with him when he comes back the next day after I have the baby.
  • I didn't even think of that... but I will have more than $6k of equipment with me (pro camera, camcorder, laptop, etc). Rooms are private and I doubt anyone will touch those things.

  • Meh, I'm not so worried. I'm sure NO ONE who works in the maternity ward (which, like pp, is a locked, separate ward) wants to deal with the wrath of a pregnant woman in labor who's sh*t just got stolen, and I feel pretty confident that the other patients and their support people have enough to keep them occupied .... BUT, pretty sad that in this day and age we have to worry about the stuff we bring with us to the hospital being stolen while we are in labor ... kind of a sad, sad world, isn't it?  Tongue Tied
  • My SIL had  private room for her induction, labor and delivery.. An in what was a first for the nurses at this hospital she and her husband brought their Wii to play games and pass the time (I was told that he used it much more than her).

We won't be bringing more than our camera and a cell phone. I don't want DH distracted by gadgets when I need him. If he had a laptop it would be as good as leaving him at home because he'd spend his time watching shows or reading forums..

  • I would just tuck them in a drawer when you leave the room..."Out of sight, out of mind" as they say.
  • Things get stolen in hospitals all the time. Watch out for your valuables!!! See if there is a place in the room where you can lock them up?

I used to work in a department that handled that at a hospital and I wrote many sorry but we don't reimburse for lost/stolen items letters to patient that had items taken.

It is sad but they are always people who will steal if given the opportunity.

  • If you are worried, check with your insurance company about insuring everything (no homeowners won't cover it all).  I insure all my camera equip for less than $15/year.  Things can get stolen.  At one of the local hospitals here, someone stole a camcorder.  It was all caught on tape and plastered all over the news b/c the camcorder had the baby's birth on it.  Needless to say, the camcorder was returned.  My MIL is a L&D nurse and told me I should leave my rings and any other jewelry at home.

  • Same as WaterFairy.  I will have a lot of money in the electronics with me.  I am bringing my MacBook Pro, Pro Camera, Lenses, DH laptop, and Video Camera.  I just hope nothing will happen to them.
