What amounts do you freeze?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am new to this. Since I am producing more milk than I need right now I am freezing it. Currently my daughter is drinking b/t 2 & 3oz a feeding. I have started freezing but don't know what increments are good. Should I freeze 4oz bags or more? I don't know how much an older child will drink so I don't know if I should keep the bags small or make them larger. Thanks for your help.

Re: What amounts do you freeze?

  • I freeze all amounts. Whether it's 1oz or 5oz I would rather freeze it than waste it.  Therefore now that LO is in daycare I can bring her a couple 1-2oz bags for "snacks" if he needs them.

  • I freeze 4 oz in Lansinoh bags - someone suggested this a a max amount per bag to minimize leaks.  I don't usually do less to conserve the bags.   If he doen't need it all I can keep the extra in the fridge.
  • i freeze all amount as well.  ranging from 1-6.  I generally freeze any excess I have from pumping at work (which ranges).  When I dont pump enough I might only need an ounce or two so its nice to have the smaller bags to thaw.  other times i need a bottles worth.

  • Anywhere from 3 - 5 oz bags.  Depending on what I pumped for the day.  Remember once you take milk out of the freezer it's good for 24 hours so you don't have to use it all in one feeding.

  • Early on, I would freeze in increments of 1.5oz, 2oz, 2.5oz or 3oz depending on how much I pumped. Now that I can pump more at once, I freeze in 3oz, 4oz or 1.5oz bags.

DD takes between 3 and 4 oz per bottle, so I try to match that in each bag, with the 1.5oz bags to make up the difference.

  • I used to freeze larger amounts and then realized it didn't make sense. (Like one day after work I just froze the 10 oz I pumped and then when I defrosted it I didn't need it all). Now I freeze anywhere between 2-5 oz. That way I can combine 2 +2 for a bottle or 2+3 and the other amounts make a bottle by themselves. If I pump after she eats and get 1 oz I just wait and pump after she goes to bed so I can at least freeze 2 ish oz.
  • I think it depends on your situation.  I work full time and send 4 bottles/day so I have by 560oz stash frozen in 5oz increments- even if you dont' have 5oz extra from a single day you can combine and just date the earliest.  We send 1 bottle/day from frozen to rotate through the stash and figure even if she increases in ounces I can mix frozen with fresh to make the appropriately sized bottles easily enough without wasting bags.  But, this would likely not be helpful to a SAHM needing only an occasional bottle.
