I'm attending a baby shower this weekend and wanted to make the expecting couple a card containing the "top 10" hints/tips, etc on how to survive the first few weeks/months. Something like: "sleep when the baby sleeps" or "have a new diaper prepared before taking off the old diaper" etc...
They are having a boy (if that spurs any extra advice)
Do any of you ladies have any tips they want to share?
Thanks!!
Re: Hints -Tips - Advice...
Stock up on all medicines for baby before they get here (baby mylicon gas drops and tylenol). No one wants to run to the store at 1AM!
Also - my friend gave me this advice and it is so true: Remember you are never alone at 3AM b/c every new parent is up feeding / soothing their child.
When people offer to help you, take them up on it! Don't be a martyr! If someone offers to bring you lunch, say yes! And when they get there, let them hold the baby while you eat! If someone comes over & asks if they can help you with anything, let them hold the baby while you shower or brush your teeth. Take advantage of those first few weeks of visitors by letting them help you or bring you food if they offer. Those offers don't last long!

Don't stress about where your baby is sleeping for the first few months whether it's on you, in the swing, in the bouncy seat, whatever, just let them sleep! You can worry about bad habits later.
Try swaddling and keep trying even if the baby doesn't seem to like it.

Try to relax and enjoy the special time as a new family. Remember EVERYONE has an opinion, go with your system for whatever works and trust your instincts!
This too shall pass! (Remember this throughout..newborn stage, teething, toddlerhood, teenage years)
This is a great post - I love that all of the advice isn't typical stuff or judgy.

Your hormones will crash around day 3 (give or take) and its ok, its normal, you are not crazy. If you need to cry - let it out.
When people ask if they can bring you food or anything - suggest breakfast food - most people bring dinners.
Happy Mommy = Happy Baby -- so dont do something you know wont work for your family if it wont make your family happy even if a bazillion and one people tell you that its what they did.
