I just got back from my 29 week appointment and found out I had gestational diabetes. I thought I had it earlier in my pregnancy but the nurse told me she doubted it because no one in my family has diabetes. Well today I did the one hour test and my blood came back at 206; which is way over the 136 limit. So, next week I have to take a 4 hour test & screening... and then see a nutritionist and go on a stricter diet then I have already put myself on. I am beginning to worry more and more with the more information I read on the net. Do I have a reason to really worry or is it somewhat normal to have gestational diabetes? TIA for any advice or help!
Re: Gestational diabetes?
I'm sorry you're having to go thru all of this but at least they were able to catch the GD and help your LO stay healthy
Hopefully your doctor and the nutritionist will have more info for you.
I had GD from week 27 and it was the best thing that happened to me, the diet is strict don't get me wrong but it is worth it. I only gained 19 lbs through my entire pregnancy. It's the best way to eat. It really seems like A lot of food, I was eating so much more with this "diet" than I was before.
I got some great advice, tips and support on the High Risk board you should check it out!
Good luck!
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis- I was diagnosed at 29 weeks also, and the internet searches that I did after that totally freaked me out. I was so frustrated with the lack of good information out there (even from my OBs office!). The High Risk Pregnancy boards have been great to read. Until you get to your appointments and receive more information, just eat lots of protein and veggies, and cut out sweets completely (obviously). Also, try to get your hands on your glucometer, strips, and lancets so that you can start testing. It is the best way to figure out what will keep you in good control. The one thing that I've noticed is that what works for one person in terms of diet and exercise might not work for another.
In terms of risk factors for baby, a woman with GD in good control is identical to a non-GD woman in terms of child outcomes. Potential complications for not being in good control include bigger babies (occasionally resulting in early induction), jaundice, and respiratory problems at birth. GL!!

GL!
glad there are some posts about this, my 1 hour test came back high and I have an appointment with the diabtes clinic next week.
It's nice to know you're not alone - I've been eating SO much healthier than I used to, and was mortified/frustrated to get those test results. Off to high risk with me too...lol
