When did DC start solids?

I got some comments from some work people, family and my pedi about starting O on solids when is 4 months old.  And I keep thinking that I want to wait, I don't want to just shovel it in if he isn't ready, and he isn't showing any interest in food or anything.  Did you automatically start at 4 months, or did you wait?

Re: When did DC start solids?

  • We didn't automatically start right at 4 months, even though the pedi gave us the go ahead. I started watching his cues more and he seemed really really interested in me eating. We started about a week ago and by the 2nd time he had cereal he knew exactly what to do! He opens his mouth, swallows it all and leans forward looking for more! I had planned on waiting until closer to 6 months, but he seemed ready.

  • I started Brooks at 4 months, but he was ready.

However - Caroline wasn't ready at 4 months, so we decided to wait to 6 months and she seems much more ready now.

  • Holly did seem ready, and we tried about a week before she turned 5 months. After a few days of it, she seemed to lose interest, so backed off for a few more weeks. She really didn't start eating them consistently until almost 6 months.

Definitely no need to push it if he doesn't seem ready!!! He's getting all he needs from his formula (I think you're FFing now???)

  • We waited until 6 months.  There is a lot of info out there on the benefits of waiting until 6 months to introduce solids.  Plus, I was just not in a rush anyway.  Starting solids was a pain, I was in no hurry to add that hassle at 4 months!

  • 4 months because she was showing signs of being ready and she did fine with it.  It just depends on the baby though!

  • We waited until 6 months. Maddie wasn't ready until then anyway, plus she had reflux and just a very sensetive tummy as a newborn, and I didn't want to introduce anything else until her system had a bit longer to develop.

To answer your question though, I don't think the trend is to start right at 4 months anymore. Some babies are ready, yes, but the new recommendation is 6 months.

  • We started DS on solids a little after 6 months. I wasn't ready but he definitely was.  I agree with pp, it is a pain to start solids.  I definitely am glad we waited this long.

  • We are holding of until just after 5 months. I am pretty sure she is ready, but I feel it's best just to wait it out a bit more.

I agree!  "When are they ready?" debate aside....solids create a lot of extra work for you!  I say wait just based on that alone.  I remember saying to DH once we started I didn't understand parents' hurry with solids since it's just more work.  Sometimes even now I wish I could mix up a batch of formula and pop a bottle in their mouths rather than arguing with them over food!  Stick out tongue

I totally agree with this! Big Smile
