1st Trimester

ultrasounds?

i was wondering if anyone's doctor told them they had to wait to get their 1st ultrasound done at 18- 20 and if so why? cause my doctor won't do one on me till i'm18-20 weeks unless he thinks there is something wrong but its driving me nuts lol. i like my doctor but i'm kinda concerned that he does not care about my pregnancy like i'd like just wondering if its normal or if i should find another doctor.....

Re: ultrasounds?

  • This is very common, and insurance often will only pay for the one unless there is a medical reason to get one earlier. Be glad your doctor sees you as being very low risk.

  • I get my first u/s monday at 6 w. I am seeing an RE so it's a bit different, but still! I would def see another doctor!

    GL!?

  • I really think it depends on the dr and area you are in, but I have heard that is completely normal in some places. My dr did one at 8 weeks to confirm and date the pregnancy (this one is standard for my dr), I will have one at 13 weeks for the NT scan (this one is optional), and then the 18-20 week one is standard for most people. Sorry you have to wait, but at least that means nothing is wrong!

  • This is normal. My Dr's office is set up the same way. The only reason I was able to get a u/s at 12 weeks is because i opted to do the NT Scan which my insurance covered. But it is typical here to do the first one at 18-20 weeks.
  • If I weren't having first trimester screening done, I would only get the 20 week u/s unless I had issues.  I was offered one for dating the pregnancy, but the m/w said we were close enough on the date I could just do the first tri screen and they could double check the dating there.   I don't think it indicates that your doctor doesn't care about your pregnancy at all.
  • Honestly it sounds really normal.  My doctor said they wouldn't do an u/s until 18 weeks either.  That along with other things that bugged me made me decide to look into another doctor.  The new doctor's office will be doing a sonogram next week and I'll be 7w3 days by then.  I think making a pg woman wait until 18 weeks is torture.  I think that insurance should approve one early and then one at 18 weeks to help us all maintain our sanity.
  • It's very normal, u/s's aren't parties and you aren't entitled to an early one.  If you get a early u/s it's usually because you've had problems in the past or are having current problems.  Be thankful that isn't your case.

  • Many insurances will not cover more than a certain number of ultrasounds usually the one around the time they could tell the sex.  Unless you have had problems (i.e. miscarriage, ectopic, ovary/uterus problems) then insurance will cover more because it is medically necessary.  chances are that is the issue in your case.  You should call the doctor office and ask if the reason you will only get the one u/s due to insurance coverage, if they say yes, then it doesn't matter what doctor you change to the coverage is going to be the same.  If they say it is not insurance related and it is just your doctor then ask if you can have one sooner.  If they say no then think about changing.
  • That is very common and it does not mean that your doctor does not care about your pregnancy......it just means you are normal.......Unless you have other reasons you think your doctor doesn't care.

  • It is apparently normal, but that does not mean you cannot ask your doctor if he is sure you cannot have one earlier.  Or find a new one (but before changing I would ask the your insurance company and the new dr. their policy on ultrasounds.) My insurance company covers as many as ordered by the dr.  I just had my first today, and will probably have my next (and last) at 20 weeks, but I did ask for the earlier ultrasound to confirm my date and also to see if there are twins (which run heavily in my family) and my dr. was like, well, let's see about that after your exam, and she said I *may* not be as far along as I thought and so she ordered one.  I was exactly as far along as I thought, but the bonus was I got to see my baby and hear and see the heartbeat! It was awesome!

I think it sucks to have to wait 20 weeks to see your baby! It just does not seem real until you see him or her.

My dr. said the same thing...I was super disappointed, but I think that is pretty common.  After reading all of the posts about early u/s to date the pregnancy, I asked about one at my first appointment.  The Dr. said they only do one if there is a problem or if she has a reason to suspect I am measuring big/ small, which she didn't.  I feel your pain!!!  On the plus side, that means everything looks good...I'm trying to focus on that!:)
