How to get DD to swallow vitamin D liquid?

My doc recommended that I give DD vitamin D drops but whenever I drop the liquid in her mouth, she makes a disgusted face (which is pretty funny) and then spits it all up. Do you have any tricks for getting baby to swallow the liquid from the dropper?

  • Put it in her cheeks towards the back or coat your nipple if you bf.

  • dd hates it too. i can't blame. i think it smells like medicine.
  • I just put a drop on my nipple before I start breastfeeding, and she doesn't even seem to notice it. If you use a pacifier, I've also heard it works on there, but I'd think she'd be more likely to spit out the pacifier if she didn't like it.
  • Are you using Tri-Vi-Sol?  My DD likes the flavor.  It smells fruity and sweet.
  • we use Tri-Vi-Sol, it's sweet and syrupy and DD likes it; I give it at the beginnig of BF, giving it after makes her vomit. She opens her mouth for it now but when she was younger, I'd put it in her cheeks or else put the dropper b/w her mouth and my nipple and slowly squeeze it in there while she BFs
  • Put it in the back of her cheek pocket.  At first DS did not like them, but he eventually got to the point where he would smile and jump around when he saw me pull them out.

  • When DD was younger and we used the plain Tri-Vi-Sol, we had no problems with just putting it in her cheek.  Now that she's older and getting it with iron, it is just awful.  Makes me cringe too.  We dilute it in her bottle (makes the milk turn an awful grey color).  Plus it's terrible to get out if you spill it - so far we've stained some clothes and the carpet.
  • Thanks everyone. Yes, we're giving her the Tri-Vi-Sol. I'll try to put it deeper down in her cheek and maybe not do the whole dropper at once and do it before feeding her. Hopefully she will start to swallow it. It's so sticky so it's messy to clean up when she spits it up.

  • Putting it in her cheek will help with it not spilling it and to help initiate a swallow rub her neck underneath her tongue.  This is where a swallow is initiated and stimulates the initiation.

  • When you put the dropper in her mouth, administer the drops and then blow on her face.  That is the trick the nurse at my DD's pediatrician's office taught me.  Blowing on their face stimulates a swallow reflex.  I had to give DD reflux meds 2x/a day for months so this trick always came in handy.  GL!

Thanks. I've never heard that. I will give that a shot.
