What's the #1 grammar/punctuation/spelling mistake that you know is wrong but constantly make anyway

I am always putting apostrophes where they don't belong. For example, in the previous sentence I typed "apostrophe's" and had to go back and change it. For some reason I have a really hard time getting rid of this habit! I'm always going back and editing errant apostrophes out of my posts.

What do you guys do?

  • grammar mistakes?

I split infinitives, and it bothers me that I do it, but I still do it.

  • Loading the player...
  • When typing they, I sometimes leave the -y out and have to reread my posts/e-mails to fix the mistake.

  • There are probably too many to count. I kind of suck in this department, but I don't really care that much. :)

  • It's kinda more my spelling/typing skills. I type pretty fast but a lot of times I reverse the g and n in words like morning.  I type mornign all the time!  Sometimes I fix it on here, sometimes I don't.  I'm like eh they know what I mean.

I see you picked a name for the baby! I love it- Charlie is such a great name!!

ETA: I also do the hyphen thing. I get a little hyphen happy sometimes!

  • I have ended a sentence in a preposition.

  • I screw up everything.  I am awful at grammar/punctuation/spelling.  I tried like everything to deal with the problem during college.  I even had a writing prof telling me that she thought I had a learning disability.  The only way I found to deal was to find people I trusted to proof my papers.  I finished college, despite a writing prof telling me I never would.  I would give a speech any day over writing something.

Thanks! We really like it too. It's fun to be able to call him by his name now :)

  • I can't spell; I mix up vowels and leave out syllables - very sad but at least I'm aware of it and always spell check.

In posts and emails I overuse the dash - it just makes typing more "speech" like.

If someone messes with kittengator, she'll kick their butt.  Should be "his or her" butt.  But we all do it.  It's gender-neutral and less wordy.

  • Commas. I use them a lot for some reason.

You know I think when I was finishing up with college this was starting to become more the norm/acceptable. I think it was even listed as "correct" in a manual somewhere!

This. Things I know I do that bother me are, run on sentences, I spell for crap & I know the difference between you're & your but I screw it up all the time by just typing to fast & not proofreading. <-----case in point.

I wrote a whole paper about the acceptance of singular "they" for a linguistics class. Interesting stuff for a word nerd.

  • Well, I know quotation marks are only supposed to be used when you are directly quoting someone. However, because there is really no other way to emphasize a word when typing, I have sort of given into the colloquial use of quotation marks.  I still do hate air quotes IRL since there  ARE ways to emphasize words without them when you are talking.
  • I end sentences with prepositions all the time. I drive myself crazy when I see what I've written or hear myself speak.
  • i use lower case letters, too many commas, and apostrophes.

    this.

and no matter if i was an english major or not - i still have to think before i write affect and effect.

  • I use ellipses way, way too much ... Wink

  • English is my second language and I have to admit I just had to look in a dictionary to find out what a preposition was.  Of course I already knew you are not supposed to finish sentences with those words, I just didn't know the terminology.  Truth be told, I don't know a lot of English grammar terminology but I do know what is and isn't grammatically correct most of the time.

And if you are Joey on Friends, he never knew how to properly use them IRL in the air!

Air quotes aren't really used to emphasize, they are used to point out something sarcastic or ironic.

PS - I use underlining to emphasize instead of quotes, so there are other ways to do it.

This. On here I don't even bother to check, if I am writing something for work I pay close attention and triple check everything.

When you are pointing something out you are emphasizing it.

Hmm, I think you are "missing my point" but whatever.
