Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Would it be a red flag if your pedi .....

......didn't know if it was OK for DC to start certain foods?  DD had an appt. yesterday and I asked about wheat because both of my baby cookbooks said "ask your pedi".  She said she'd never been asked that before and didn't know.  I gave her the side eye and asked her about eggs just to see what she'd say. Nope, didn't have an answer for that either.  WTH?  This is basic stuff, right?

She really upset DH with something else a few months ago, so I'm on the phone right now trying to change to a different PCM, but it looks like I'm SOOL.  And apparently, I'm out of line for even complaining since the military/government is kind enough to be providing my family with "free" healthcare.

  • Yes that would be a major red flag I mean isn't that what she is supposed to know?

  • I think that is odd. You can ask 5 different pedis when to start a food and get 5 different answers, but most have an opinion.

  • That would be enough to make me switch doctors. It's not that she doesn't give you age limits - some doctors don't - but that she says she's never even been asked and doesn't know. That is strange.

I'm sorry you're having trouble with switching. GL.

  • I grew up in military hospitals as a kid and my parents never complained.  I wish they had b/c my brother ended up with horrible bronchitis b/c his doc never would try to take care of it.  He always told my mom it was just a cold.  I would personally think it odd that she didn't know.  Good Luck with being able to switch.  It may be very tough.
  • Hey I am assuming you are military based on your location. What I would do is call the Patient Advocate at the hospital and complain. I guarantee you can get changed. Also, you can request to have your DC seen off post... there is a huge paperwork process but if you put the things you mentioned on here and you DH's complaint you request will probably be granted.

  • Is the doc an actual pediatrician?  Family practice?  Or general health?  We had to see another doc once for DD that wasn't "ours" and she just wasn't as good and knowledgable.  I mean, they're fine doctors, but when it comes to baby-specifics, a person can only know so much, especially when it's not their specialty.
  • She is not a general practitioner? She is a pediatrician? If she is a pedi I would be concerned and I would have let her know it. Things that can cause major allergic reactions in an infant are things she should know! Even my general practitioner knows these things.?

riiiight. b/c you all are just sitting on your asses_  forcing the gov to provide for you, not providing any sort of service to our country! ugh. that would piss me off.

  • Yikes!  I know nothing about military health care but I hope you can find someone else.

I was talking to the PA!  I'm not surprised she's giving me the run around, though.  Things were so bad at our previous MTF, that DH would just go straight to the hospital commander's office (the PA told me that my miscarriage and complications weren't a "priority").  DH is just here for CGSC, so by the time the paperwork is approved, we'll be heading to Camp Pendleton.

  • She's a pedi, but she's older.  We had to see a family practice doctor at our last appt. and I liked her so much better.  She was about our age, had just had a baby and seemed to be a lot more "up to date" and confident in her advice.
