Preemies

First word(s)?

When did your LO clearly say their first word with meaning? For instance say DaDa or MaMa to get your attention or to you...meaning they aren't babbling. I know this varies a lot so I am interested to hear from preemie moms.

Also, what did your LO say? I am a SAHM and I tell my husband all the time it's gonna be MaMa because I tell him, "MaMa loves you" about a billion times a day but I know DaDa is easier.

My son talks A LOT and loves to have "conversations" with me but no words yet.

Re: First word(s)?

  • Somewhere b/t 10 and 11 months he started saying "dada" and later "mama" and "dog" with purpose. He also occassionally says "bye" and "banana." He doesn't say any of these things every time though and rarely "on command." Around 11 months is when we saw a big change in his language - he started repeating EVERYTHING. His favorite toy is the "see and say" (The Farmer Says toy we all had as kids). He loves to repeat the animal sounds.

Oh, and "yay." Not sure if that counts as a word, but that's what he says if people clap or get excited. He also throws his arms in the air when he says (As in my siggy pic).

  • One of my little guys started saying "Dat?" when he was about 11 months adjusted. The other little guy started saying "uh oh" when he was about 12 or 13 months adjusted. Niether of them said mama or dada before then.

Now the guy who had his first word later says about 2x as many words as the guy that talked earlier! They're both in speech therapy now, but I have a feeling that the more wordy kiddo will be dismissed from therapy soon.

DS didn't say his first word with meaning until he was 13 months old. He was just beginning to babble dadada before that, but he doesn't "call" us Mama & Dada.

As of now, at 15 months, he only has two words--flowers & Hailie (one of our dogs). He isn't much of a talker & definitely wasn't babbling at 6 months!

He was saying dada for a long time but without meaning...then mama (still without meaning) then just shy of 12 months adjusted he started saying fish (sounded more like "dih" but it was obvious what it meant and he only said it when he saw or wanted one).

At his 2yr well visit he only had about 30 words and half of those were animal sounds...he also never put words together unless they came out that way.  For example, he never said "hi mama" but would say "all done" since the later came out that way the first time.  Then suddenly at 2yrs, 4mos (actual) he spit out a 5 word sentence and hasn't shut up since - he just turned 3.5 :-)
