Vent: Maternity leave is NOT a vacation!

OK, I realize I am 38 weeks pregnant and I am probably just extremely moody but I am going to slap the next person who makes a comment to me about "oh, well at least you will get a break soon", etc.  Obviously I am going to enjoy the time I will be spending with my DD but it is still by no means a vacation, or break, or anything of that nature.  Vent over...

  • Vent on! You are so right!

  • Since I work about 70 hours a week, it will be a break for me.  I know that raising my kid will be another job, but considering the hours I physically work, it will definitely be a BIG difference and although it's not a "vacation" I can understand why some people consider it a break.  I am looking forward to not being a workaholic for 10 weeks.  That's just me though. I understand how you can get irritated by these comments.
  • True but I am so looking forward to 6 - 8 weeks without dealing with work!

  • I am looking forward to maternity leave as a 12 week break from work, for sure. What's wrong with that? No, it's not a vacation. But it's 12 weeks I don't have to be here and can be at home on a break from everything else while I get to know my LO. No one is saying - you're going to have it so easy sitting around doing nothing all day for 3 months! Then maybe I would start complaining.

  • It's not a vacation but a break for sure. I would much rather be at home for 12 weeks than be at work!

  • ML is most definitely NOT a vacation. Actually, my DH admitted that he was a little relieved to go back to work, because "it's easier." :)

  • Not to stress semantics too much but are they really saying vacation or are they saying break? Because it IS a break from work. Not a vacation though, that's for sure.

I wasn't specifying between vacation or break...I just keep getting comments from people that make it seem like they think maternity leave is a jolly ol' time and that they are somewhat jealous I am getting to go out soon, etc.  I have been there done that before, I have a son and I know how grueling (and rewarding) that time can be...it just annoys me when people act like I will be sleeping and cuddling the baby all day and that's all that's envolved.

  • my coworkers refer to it as my "vacation" too, and it makes my blood boil.

"vacation" suggests relaxation, margaritas, and lounging around.  NOT taint stitches, butt donuts, sleep deprivation and a screaming baby, TYVM.

  • I hear ya!  I took a week off in July for vacation time.  If I don't use my vacation time before leave, I loose it at the end of the year.  I got the nastiest comments from co-workers how I shouldn't be able to take vacation time because I already get 8+ weeks off in Septemeber.  WTF?  I am off on medical leave.  I will remember that next time someone needs back surgery or something and has to be off for medical.  I am just entitled to the vacation time I have earned as much as anyone else.
  • OMG I totally agree!  The girls at the salon I work at are like, "When you get back, I'm gonna take 8 weeks vacation too, so you can deal with the same thing we have to!"  HELLO?!  If you want to come deal with a screaming new born at 3 a.m. I will GLADLY go to work for you the next day.  C'MON!   I agree:  VENT ON

I understand. Well, if they aren't moms then they really don't know the real deal. Again, it is a break from work so that's something to be jealous of for some people. I don't take it lightly since I've been there, done that but I'm still jealous *in a way* of my CW friends who go on maternity leave because they get a break from our job. NOT that I think their time off is a vacation or easy by any means. I know it is not.

  • I had this happen to me yesterday--another attorney (male of course) on one of my cases commented that it was just perfect that I was going on vacation during the time that the case started to get really busy.  And he said it with extreme bitterness--like I planned conception knowing that things would get busy in August.  Oh, not to mention the fact that I'm not going on a vacation that I can just cancel.
  • I know it isn't a vacation but I can't help but get excited about getting to spend 6 weeks with MY new child instead of 6 weeks at school teaching 200 children who belong to other people!

There is definitely some excitement that comes with the maternity leave.

?That being said... a teacher at my school that had a baby last November said she found that coming back to school provided more of a "break" for her.??
