Help with bathtime

DS HATES bathtime.  With a fiery burning passion... all he does as soon as a single toe hits the water is turn purple and scream.  I have tried sitting in the tub with him and holding him, bringing in his toy he loves, giving him his pacifier, nothing works.  Now I just try to go as fast as possible while trying to soothe him.  Did anyone else have this issue, and how did you fix it?  I would like to have a fun, quiet bathtime :)

Re: Help with bathtime

  • IIRC, bath time was one of those things that sometimes DS hated and sometimes he loved.  It seems like he tolerated baths in the kitchen sink, but hated his baby tub.  When we moved to the duck tub, at first he was freaked out by it, then he loved it.  Then after awhile, he hated it again.  He has loved bath time again ever since he has been in the big tub.  Sorry that's not much help... my point is that it may just change on its own as Owen gets older & changes.  In the meantime, I'd just continue trying different variations to see if you find something that makes him happy in the bath.

  • Are you bathing him in a baby tub or in your bathtub?  Maybe try something different like ECU suggested?  Have you tried sitting him up in his tub?  Maybe he's ready to move out of his infant tub into something like the Munchkin duck tub.

  • Maybe he is cold? Try wetting some wash cloths in warm water and putting them on his body.  This helped us when DS hated baths.  I also started taking a bath with him and he LOVED that!  Saves me some time too:)
  • I agree with ECU and crescent... I'd try a change of scenery. Maybe try duck tub. Or he seems pretty happy in his bumbo have you ever tried giving him a bath in that? If he likes that you could try a bath seat. Or maybe look for a Bumbo on Craigslist... might be cheaper.
  • Thanks for the suggestions!  I have actually thought about putting the Bumbo in there, so I am going to look into that seat.  We have switched bathrooms and tubs, taken out the infant sling and just use the baby tub, nothing seems to make him happy.  I will try the warm washcloths, too.
  • I feel you--Luke does not like baths either. Last week was the first time he did not cry during a bath and I think it was because I made the water a bit warmer than normal. We have one of the bath luv washcloths that you can wet in warm water and drape over him too and that seems to help, but I think the water temp may have been too cold for him previously. GL, I know what a challenge it is to bathe a cranky baby!
