Rice Cereal in Bottle question

Hi - I have 5.5 month old twins and wanted to start putting rice cereal in their bottle at night.  I usually give them about 7 oz and am not sure how much rice cereal to mix in.  Anyone have any idea??? thanks:)

Re: Rice Cereal in Bottle question

  • Why are you putting cereal in their bottle?  My advice - don't do it!  If you are concerned about anything, call your pedi.

  • It's the old wives tale about getting the baby to sleep through the night by giving it something a little harder to digest for bedtime.  That way they supposedly wake up less often because there tummies are full longer.

I didn't do this because I didn't like the sounds of it.  If you're ready to start your baby on solids, do it the right way with the spoon and high chair.  Five and a half months is just about right for starting solids, so go ahead and start, already!

  • I've read not to do this anymore.

  • Don't do it. Honestly it is not good for the baby. Talk to your pedi about it.
  • Seriously don't do it. It's a choking hazard and adding cereal does not make them sleep longer. Rice cereal is all carbs so it will actually burn off more quickly than formula which has protein (and actual nutrition) in it. If you want to feed rice, do it from a bowl. Don't put it in the bottle.

  • You know what?  My 1st child's gramma is old school and she did that for him when he was about 5 mths, he's now gonna 8 and he's just fine.

I did ask my pediatrician the 2nd time around and was told not to give the baby's anything in their milk, it makes them pack on the pounds faster.  If I wanted to give the baby cereal, I'd have to wait till they can sit up on their own and spoon feed it.

I say trust the pediatrician :)
