Diapering infant - new to CD

Hello.  I read back about 6 pages and didn't see my question, but I'm sure it's asked all the time (sorry).  We're going to give CD a shot, and I'm considering ordering a mix of unbleached prefolds and Kissaluvs size 0.  Any suggestions for how many of each to order?  I'd like to have enough to do laundry every other day.  Any tips or advice is appreciated!

Re: Diapering infant - new to CD

  • I think at the newborn stage people estimate at least 12 diaper changes a day if not a few more.  So possibly if you had 12 of each and 4-5 covers?  If you really want to be washing only every other day I'd go for even more than that though.  Like another 12 diapers at least, because you'll need diapers for your LO to wear while you're laundering them.  Also, get yourself a wetbag to put your used diapers in while you're out and about.  So very very handy and they're pretty cute nowadays too.

My last tip?  Do cloth wipes.  It's actually much easier when you're CDing because you just leave the wipes with the diaper.  When I'm out and sometimes use disposable wipes they get left inside the diaper and make all sorts of havoc in the wash with my velcro covers and diapers.  I use baby wash cloths - couldn't get much easier.  But making wipes would be very economical and easy too.

Don't worry about asking "duplicate" questions, EVERYONE does it.  Asking is how you learn.  We used prefolds and Kissaluvs in the begining too.  We did 1 dz unbleached Kissaluvs and 2 dz unbleached Green Mountain Prefolds (1 dz yellow and 1 dz orange).  LO was too small at birth for the yellow (5 lbs) so we used the orange and kissaluvs for the first few weeks and I think we did laundry every other day.  When LO was about 9 lbs we used the yellow and orange (the yellow had to be folded down in the back.  We also used 4 thirsties covers.  In addition, we used CD from birth and had no issues with the meconium (which is usually another big question), I didn't use a liner or pre-soak and had no staining issues.  Best of luck!
  • Thanks, ladies!  Just loaded up my cart at Jillian's Drawers.  I'm sure I'll be back in a few weeks with more questions.  Have a nice night!

  • Loved prefolds (and XS all in ones), liked KLOs (and other fitteds) for the newborn stage. I'd get about 30 or so total for the first few weeks. Probably more pf's just because the fitteds didn't fit for very long at all, but then again, my daughter is on the big side. I'd get some covers (thirsties were my favorites at first), 2 pail liners and at least 1 wet bag, add in CD safe diaper cream and detergent, and you should be good to go!

I just wanted to chime in to say that we have 24 KL0's, and we've been doing laundry more like every day and a half (which as you can guess, often feels like every day!).

DEFINITELY go the cloth wipe route, too--very easy since you're washing your dipes too.
