d&c question

so my d&c isn't scheduled until 4:15 tomorrow, so we have to get there at 3:15. they said no food after midnight no water after 6:00 am. now i know this is the party line for all procedures the next day.

i seriously may murder someone if i can't eat or drink all day tomorrow on top of everything else, anyone know what the real deal is if there is another time it would be safe for me to eat?

Re: d&c question

  • I know how you feel. I had an emergency laparoscopy and D&C last Friday and it killed me as I had half an english muffin that morning around 6:30 and I didn't get to have surgery until 7 PM that night! I could have killed the nurses talking about mexican food outside of my pre-op room.

I don't have an answer for your question but I just wanted to wish you GL!

  • I would call back and ask.  For my lap (last year), I was scheduled to go into surgery at like 2pm and my RE was WAY behind that day and I ended up not going back into surgery until like 5--I was STARVING.  The nurses kept saying had they known, I could have eaten that morning.  So, yes, I would just in inquire--but unfortunately I doubt if they will let you eat.  It is interesting though---the party line is the same.  I had another procedure at 8am once and I couldn't eat after midnight.  I think it's an 8 hour requirement.

I'm really sorry...I will tell you though that you'll really need your H after the d&c.  I thought I was over what had happened and we were actually laughing before the procedure, but when I woke up I had waves of feelings/emotions that I apparently had not dealt with.  I'll be thinking of you tomorrow...

  • i asked when i called for the scheduled time, but i think they have to say the whole 12/6 thing no matter what. my mom's friends are married dr & nurse pair so i may have her call them and ask for me.

  • i can't answer your question, but i would definitely say to call your doc and double-check.  that seems to be an awfully long time.

i'm sorry you have to go through this.  huge ((hugs)).

  • It's usually 12 hours before surgery. I would call back and ask.

  • First, I'm so sorry for your loss! I didn't get to respond to your earlier post.

Second, I think I was allowed to have "clear liquids" up until 8 hours before the surgery - and things like jello and broth and sprite counted as clear liquids. It wouldn't hurt just to double check!!

Otherwise, the way I've made it through all day without eating is basically parking my butt on the couch and watching TV, and sleeping as much as possible. And don't watch the food network!

  • I'm so sorry, I didn't see your post about your m/c. My D&C was very early, had to be there at 7, so can't help. It does realy suck you can't eat or drink, that's such a long time. Get some rest. The D&C itself isn't too bad. I was just sad and out of it for the whole weekend and mine was a Thursday. Take care.
  • The main reason not to eat is that you can get naseous from the meds. It is usually safe to eat within 12 hrs though, but I would keep it light just to be safe. The last thing you want is to wake up puking.

Try to keep your mind occupied before you have to go in although I know it's hard you want to try to be as relaxed as possible, easier said than done. I wish you the best and will send positive thoughts your way!
