Pennsylvania Babies

just a little disappointed (a long one)

So this morning was not what we expected, at all.

Went in for my 40-week check-up to find that I haven't progressed at all since last week.  Still 1 cm and 80 percent effaced.  Sigh.  No worries, because Hershey won't let me go beyond 41 weeks, right?

Yeah, funny how "beyond 41 weeks" can be interpreted two completely different ways.  I thought it meant we could schedule induction anytime within the seven days following my EDD.  Nope, not the case.  "Beyond 41 weeks" to the docs means they won't let me go INTO my 42nd week, and they prefer NOT to induce PRIOR to the first day of the 41st week.  Double sigh.

So we scheduled induction for 6 a.m. on July 29.  I would really prefer things progress on their own, so this wider timeframe is OK by me, but DH's eagerness to get this baby out and my misinterpretation of the whole 41 week issue led me to get my hopes up that we may have a baby this week.

And we still might, but it doesn't look likely.

And since my FH measurement was low again (37, if she was being generous) and my total weight gain is a few pounds lower than the low end of average, we got ANOTHER ultrasound today.  But this time a real one at the hospital, to check baby's growth.

The good news is that he's doing perfectly fine, and all estimated eight pounds of him are hiding inside me somewhere.  We were both a little surprised at the growth estimate, considering everyone has said how small he'll likely be, and I'm relieved.  Margin of error is about a pound, so it looks like my instincts were right, so far, in thinking all along I he'd be at least seven pounds.

So unless I spontaneously start dilating, it looks like baby boy is going to be a late-comer.  DH is just beside himself.  He's an absolute basket case.  But he made me laugh when, out of frustration, he half-jokingly told me my cervix is an @sshole.  You know, for not doing anything.

  • Hang in there! An over baked baby is MUCH easier than an under baked baby!!! LOL!

  • I'm sorry :(  Hopefully you'll go into labor this week on your own and he'll be here!

  • Here's hoping labor starts on its own! At my 40w1d appt my cervix was still high and tightly closed - no sign of anything at all. at 40w5d I started having my first BH, at 40w6d I suddenly went into labor on my own!
  • Either way, he'll be here in 8 days! Someone told me for each extra day the better they're likely to be at BFing. Doubt it's full true, but made me feel better :)
  • Things can happen at any time.  I wasn't dialated at all at my appt just a couple of days before I had Ethan.  When we got to the hospital I was barely dialated 2 cm but my water had broken and I was in labor.  He arrived less than 9 hours later.  Hang in there.  He'll be here soon!

  • I was only 50% effaced and 1cm dilated at my 38 week appointment and I went into labor the next day.  There's still hope!  At least your DH is having a good sense of humor about it. That sounds like something my DH would come up. Good luck to you and your cervix on getting things moving before next week.
  • Just wanted to wish you luck - hopefully he'll make his own appearance before the 29th! Hang in there, within 8 days your son will be here!!
  • So sorry about your disappointment.  I completely understand and I am only 37.5 weeks.  I wish my DH would be half as eager to get your baby out as yours.  I am the impatient one!  I am happy that you at least know that your baby will be here in 8 days is it?  Congrats! I wish that we could say the same, this is the worst having to wait so long for something that has taken so long in the first place. take care!

  • Hope your LO decides to join us soon :-) If not, GL w/ the induction!!
