Possible stupid question re: clomid

Lurking over on the TTTC board I've seen lots of warnings against unmonitored IUIs with clomid for fear of HOM. The thing i dont understand is that many docs will prescribe clomid for straight couples TTC with TI (unmonitored).

So how is that any different than an unmonitored IUI in terms of HOM? Seems like the risk would be the same....

It's not different.  It really should be monitored and just because someone is doing TI instead of IUI doesn't mean they shouldn't have u/s.  It's my impression that most unmonitored cycles happen because people are still seeing an OBGYN instead of an RE.  Once couples get to an RE stage they are almost always monitored.

Also it's important to monitor on clomid because it has the potential to cause cysts and that's not a good thing to have go un-noticed.

Clomid can al;so thin out your lining so much that implantation is nearly impossible. You often need Estrace to combat the thin lining or the whole cycle could end up a bust.
