Sleep training: Take 1

We are trying to get O to sleep through the night better, he wakes up so often fussy for no reason.  I always go in and rock him to get him to settle, and he never even opens his eyes.  So last night we decided to try a kind of modified Ferber.  We let him fuss for a few minutes, sometimes he fell back asleep in 2-3 minutes.  If not, we went in there and just gave him his paci or rubbed him saying it was ok, and he would pass right out.  Unfortunately, we had to do this 4 or 5 times, plus a feeding around 4.  We also put him down earlier when he was drowsy and he put himself to sleep.

I think I ruined it though, because he started crying hard around 5:30 and I just brought him to bed with us instead of getting up for the day.  I was too darn tired!  Once he was in bed with us he slept awesome... yet another habit we have to break.  Oh well, we will keep trying the kind of CIO for a few nights and see it gets any better.

  • my DS started sleeping really poorly around 3.5 months and nothing has helped.  We considering a modified Ferber too but I'm not ready to let him cry in the middle of the night.  I'm always too worried and wonder if they are truly hungry or in pain.  GL

  • The one good thing about this is that O has a very definite cry for hunger, so we know when it's him crying because he is hungry or when he is just being fussy.  I don't know if I could do it to him otherwise, but he doesn't really cry as much as he does just make noise.
  • I can't distinguish b/w a hunger cry b/c he rarely cries due to hunger.  GL and hopefully he'll start sleeping better.
  • Keira WAS sleeping through the night at 2 months, but then she hit 3 months and a growth spurt and out the window sleeping went. Now she wakes up every night around 3 or 4 and wants to eat. Sometimes she wakes up at 5, and like you, in to bed to snuggle she goes and out we all go, and she sleeps SO good. ::sigh:: I swore I would NEVER let a baby sleep in my bed but when you are exhausted and you know they will sleep and you can get some extra sleep, you do whatever it takes. I don't think this is getting her used to our bed or anything. She goes down fine at night, and normally fine in the middle of the night after a feeding so I'm not worried about it. Good luck!

  • Sounds like to me you are doing all the right things. This is what I did with AT at that age. He would eat around 4, and then go back to bed with me. That feeding stoped after month or so and he slept longer. It wont take long. You are doing all the right things. The key is to not pick them up but let them know you are there to comfort, when its not a feeding time so they can soothe. GL!
