We had our tour at a local birthing center last night and it was
packed - 12 couples were touring which was exciting to me. I absolutely loved it! It was exactly what I was
hoping it would be and their philosophy is completely in line with
ours. I have an appt with my regular OB on Monday and plan to switch to
the birthing center right after that. Here are a few of the things that made the biggest impression on us:
- They have 3 birthing suites, all with a water birth option.
- Their c-section rate is less than 8% compared to 45% at the local hospital.
- They perform an episiotomy once a year or less compared to 79% of all births at the local hospital. The one midwife hasn't performed one in almost 4 years!
- They have birthing chairs, stools, balls etc...
- IVs are not standard, but available in the event of dehydration.
- Monitoring done only with a doppler not a EFM.
- They let the cord pulse for 5min before cutting.
- They do not separate mom from baby until mom is ready - typically around the 2hr mark.
- You are able to eat and drink during labor and the kitchen is available for family to cook what they feel like.
- You can go home 4hrs after birth or stay as long as you need to.
- They
are 100% equipped for an emergency and are right next to a fire station
that can transport you to hospital in aprox 8min. About 10% of women
who begin labor at the birthing center end up at the hospital for a
combination of non-emergency (stalled labor for more than 4-5hrs is one
ex) and emergency reasons.
You can also deliver with their
group at the local hospital if that is more your comfort level and they
will stay with you the entire time and work within hospital guidelines
to implement your birth plan. Of course, if you are not a candidate for
a birthing center birth (pre-e, GD, or high risk in anyway) you will
deliver at the hospital.
Anyway, Dh and I felt 100% comfortable and at ease. I am so glad I decided to explore this option. Thanks for reading!
