My baby Jacob Elliot was born Tuesday June 30th at 7:01 pm following a very quick induction. He was 7 pounds 11 ounces and 20 inches long.
We were scheduled to be induced at 7am on Tuesday June 30th. The room wasn't ready yet for us when we got to the hospital, so I was set up in a temporary room on a monitor all morning. At noon a nurse came to do an internal in order to determine the induction "game plan". I was 3cm dilated already. At 1pm, they started the pitocin on low.
At 2pm, I was transfered to my hospital room. I was having some cramping, but no contractions. We were waiting for the doctor to come and break my water, but she was in surgery. Between 2-4, they upped the pitocin levels, but I still wasn't feeling contractions. At 4, the doctor came to break my water. She thought I was going to have the a Canada Day baby the next day. At this point I was at 4cm.
As soon as my water broke, the contractions started and they were intense! They were coming every 3 minutes and lasting for about 60-90 seconds. I asked for the epidural pretty quick, the contractions were just coming too fast and too strong for me to handle them. I had the epidural around 5:30 and it FAILED! It actually took some of the edge off, but it didn't do anything for the contractions. I had to wait half an hour to see if it would take effect before they gave me another dose. The second dose didn't do anything to take the edge off the contractions. They were just getting more intense.
I was checked at 630 and I was 6 cm dilated. Within 15 minutes, I was screaming and feeling an urge to push. The nurse checked me and I was at 10 cm. I went from 6-10 in about 15 minutes. Everything after that is a bit blurry, but I pushed about 4 times before the baby's heartrate dropped a lot and they vacuumed him out. They put him right on me skin to skin and left him there for two hours. Jacob never left our room the entire time. All in all, from the induction time to delivery was 6 hours, I feel really lucky!
FI and I are now at home enjoying our little bundle. We are still getting a hang of breastfeeding, latching is a work in progess. We are so in love with him.
